‘Imrān ibn al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his journeys, and there was a woman from the Ansār riding a she-camel. It annoyed her and so she invoked curse upon it. Hearing that, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Unload it and set it free, for it is cursed." It is as if I could still see it walking amongst people and no one trying to hold it.

‘Imrān ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a woman from the Ansār was riding her she-camel. She became displeased with it and started to curse it. Hearing her curse of the she-camel, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that it should be unloaded of her luggage and set free, for it was cursed. ‘Imrān (may Allah be pleased with him) added: I saw that she-camel walking amongst the people and no one showing any concern for it. This is because the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that it should be released.

Once we traveled with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). We set out traveling at night until the last part of it. Hence, we (halted at a place) and slept (deeply). There is nothing sweeter than sleep for a traveler in the last part of the night. It was only the heat of the sun that woke us up. ‘Imrān ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Once we traveled with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). We set out traveling at night until the last part of it. Hence, we (stopped at a place) and slept (deeply). There is nothing sweeter than sleep for a traveler in the last part of the night. It was only the heat of the sun that woke us up. The first to wake up was so and so, then so and so, then so and so, and then ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb. Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to sleep, nobody would wake him up until he himself wakes up, because we did not know what was happening to him in his sleep. So when ‘Umar woke up and saw what happened to the people, and being a strict man, he said: "Allah Akbar" raising his voice with Takbīr. He kept on making Takbīr raising his voice with it until the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) woke up by his voice. When he got up, people complained to him about what had happened to them. He said: "There is no harm (or it does not matter). Depart!" So he departed. He walked not too long, and then dismounted and asked for water and made ablution. The call for the prayer was made, and he led people in prayer. After finishing the prayer, he saw a man in isolation. He did not pray with the people. So [the Prophet] asked, "O so and so! What prevented you from praying with the people?" He replied, "I have had a ritual impurity and there is no water." So he said: "Use earth; it is sufficient for you." Then the Prophet proceeded on and people complained to him of thirst. Thereupon, he dismounted and called a person and 'Ali. He said to them: “Go and find water.” So they departed and met a woman who was sitting on her camel between two bags of water. They asked: "Where is water?" She said: "I was at water this hour yesterday, and our men are absent." They said to her, “Then go.” She asked: "Where?" They said: "To the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." She said: "The one who is called Sābi' (apostate/who renounce his forefathers' religion)?" They said: "He is the one whom you mean. So come along." They brought her to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and told him the story. He said: "Help her to dismount her camel." The Prophet asked for a pot and poured in it water from the mouths of the two bags. Then he tied their mouths and released their bottoms. People were called upon to drink and water their animals. So whoever wanted to drink did so, and whoever wanted to water their animals did so. Last of all, the Prophet gave a pot of water to the person who had a ritual impurity and said: “Go and pour it on you.” The woman was there looking at what was being done with her water. By Allah, when it was done with [her bags], they looked to us as if they were fuller than it was when they started taking [water] from the bags. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Collect something for her.” So they collected for her some ‘Ajwa (dates of Madīnah), flour and some dough, until some food was gathered for her, which they put in a piece of cloth. They helped her mount her camel and put that cloth in front of her. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "You know, we have not taken any of your water; it was Allah who has given us water." She went to her people, when she was delayed from her people. So they said: "O so and so what has delayed you?" She said: "A strange thing! Two men met me and took me to the man who is called Sābi' who did such and such a thing. By Allah, he is either the greatest magician between this and this (gesturing with her index and middle fingers toward the sky and earth) or he is really the Messenger of Allah." Afterward, Muslims used to attack the pagans around her abode but never touched the area to which it belonged. One day she said to her people, "I do not think that these people leave you on purpose. So have you got any inclination to Islam?" They obeyed her and all of them embraced Islam.

This Hadīth contains a few rulings and miracles that appeared to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). They were on a journey and overslept until the time of dawn prayer (Fajr) was over. So the Prophet showed them what they had to do in such a situation, which was to make up the prayer. Another issue was at hand that one of the Companions had a ritual impurity, but there was no water. So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to make a dry ablution, which would serve in the absence of water with which one would bathe. The third thing was a miracle of the Prophet, that is when the people complained of thirst and lack of water. So he sent two Companions to go and find water. They did not find any water, but they came across a woman who had water is two containers. They took her to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). So he took some water from her bags and supplicated Allah until water was abundant. The Companions drank and watered their animals. Even the one who was ritually impure took some water and bathed. Then the woman took her containers back and said: “It is as if they are fuller than before.” To reward her, the Prophet ordered that some food be collected for her. This situation and treatment made her and her tribe later embrace Islam.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed out that the main rule is to pray while standing, except when one is unable to do so, in which case he can pray while sitting, and if he cannot, he can pray while lying on his side.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Prayer does not cease to be due as long as a person retains his sanity. He may move from one condition to another according to his capacity.
  • The Hadīth shows the leniency and ease of Islam, as it allows a person to perform worship in accordance with his ability.

In this Hadīth, ‘Imrān ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about a man who divorced his wife and then had intercourse with her after he took her back in marriage, but without calling anybody to witness either divorce or reunion. ‘Imrān (may Allah be pleased with him) answered that such a husband has violated the Sunnah in both cases as he has not brought witnesses to the divorce or to the reunion. He ordered him to bring witnesses for the divorce and the reunion and to avoid doing so again.

Understand this hadith

The Hadīth relates that a slave or a small boy belonging to some poor people cut off the ear of his peer who belonged to rich people. The owners of the former went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the fact that they were poor. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not stipulate any compensation for the owners of the victim. The reason for that was that the offender was young, and his action did not necessitate punishment. Some scholars stated that legal retribution was not carried out in this case because the offender was young. However, the blood money due on crimes less than murder still had to be paid by his male paternal relatives, who were poor. Therefore, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) absolved them from paying the indemnity. Moreover, an intentional crime by a young boy takes the ruling of crimes committed by mistake according to the consensus of the scholars. Therefore, blood money was not due on his male paternal relatives because they were poor; meanwhile, blood money is due on the male paternal relatives who are rich. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) probably paid the blood money from the public treasury.

In this Hadīth, ‘Imrān ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave the polytheists a man from them and took two Muslim men from them instead. The Muslim jurists say that if the Muslims take prisoners of war, the Imām has four choices regarding them. These choices should be based upon the ruler's keenness to realize the best interest of Muslims. They are: killing them, enslaving them, setting them free for nothing, or setting them free for money or in exchange for Muslims imprisoned by the disbelievers.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that the best group of people living in the same era are the generation of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions. Then come those who follow them of the believers who met the Companions but did not meet the Messenger of Allah. Then those who follow them, the followers of the Tābi‘is. The Companion hesitated in mentioning whether the fourth generation was also included. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: After them will come a people who betray and people will not trust them, who testify before being asked to give testimony, who make vows but do not fulfill them, and who indulge excessively in food and drink until obesity becomes widespread among them.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The best century and generation in the entire span of the world's history is the century in which the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions lived. It is mentioned in Sahīh Al-Bukhāri that he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was sent in the best centuries of the children of Adam, one century after another, until I was in the century in which I was."
  • Ibn Hajar said: This Hadīth implies that the Companions are superior to the Tābi‘is, and the Tābi‘is are superior to the followers of the Tābi‘is. However, is this superiority in reference to the group as a whole or to individuals? This is a matter of discussion, but the majority are inclined to the latter.
  • This refers to the necessity of adhering to the way of the first three generations, as those whose time was closer to the time of prophethood are more deserving of merit, knowledge, and emulation in following the guidance of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
  • A vow: It is the obligation that a legally competent person imposes upon himself to perform an act of obedience not made obligatory by the Legislator, expressed through any statement indicating such an intention.
  • Condemnation of betrayal, failure to fulfill vows, and attachment to worldly life.
  • Condemnation of testifying without being called to give testimony, if the rightful claimant is aware of it. However, if he is unaware, it falls under the statement of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): "Shall I not tell you about the best of witnesses? The one who comes forward with his testimony before being asked for it." [Narrated by Muslim]
