Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimAuthentic hadith

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard voices arguing at the door of his house.

Narrator in the source: أم سلمة

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard voices arguing at the door of his house. He went out to them and said: "I am only a human being, and you refer your disputes to me. Perhaps some of you are more eloquent than others, so I deem him truthful and rule in his favor. He whom I, by my judgment, give an undue share of a Muslim's right, then it is indeed a portion of fire, so let him burden himself with it or abandon it."

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard clamor at his door, due to people being engaged in dispute and quarrel. He went out to judge between them, saying: I am only a human like you. I do not know the unseen, nor am I informed about hidden matters so that I would recognize the truthful from the liar among you. People come to me to judge between them. My judgment, however, is based on each party's argument, evidence and oaths that I hear. Perhaps some are more eloquent than others and can express themselves better, so I believe them to be truthful and on the right side. Thus, I judge in their favor, although the truth, in reality, is on the other party's side. So, you should know that I give my judgment according to what is apparent and not what is hidden, which does not make the unlawful lawful. Consequently, whoever receives something based upon my judgment that is the right of his brother, while he knows that he is not taking it rightfully, then I am giving him nothing but a piece of fire. So, let him carry it, if he wishes, or leave it. The punishment for this returns upon him, and Allah is lying in wait for those who do injustice to others.

Umm Sulaym al-Ansāriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him about something. But as her question pertained to the private parts, something people would usually feel shy to talk about, she said a few words as a prelude to the question, preparing the attendees for what was to come. She noted that Allah, the Almighty, does not refrain from speaking the true things which people may refrain from due to shyness, as long as mention of such things is useful. After this introduction, she got to the point and asked: Is a woman required to take a ritual bath if she sees in a dream that she engages in sexual intercourse. In reply, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, she is, if she sees vaginal fluid.

The garment that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) liked most was the Qamīs (long shirt) because it covers the body better than the Izār and Ridā'. Also, because it is one piece and thus easier to wear. However, if you are in a country where people are used to wearing Izār and Ridā' and you dress like them, there is no harm in that. The important thing is to not oppose the style of the people of the country, thereby becoming famous for it. Indeed, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing garment for fame and vanity.

When a woman’s husband died, she would go into a small hut, wear her worst clothes and would not touch any kind of perfume until a whole year would pass. Then an animal – a donkey, bird, or sheep – would be brought to her and she would rub her skin with it

Can we apply Kohl thereto?" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said 'No' twice or thrice. Then he said: "It is only four months and ten days. In the pre-Islamic era, you women would throw away the dung after a year had passed." Zaynab said: “When a woman’s husband died, she would go into a small hut, wear her worst clothes and would not touch any kind of perfume until a whole year would pass. Then an animal – a donkey, bird, or sheep – would be brought to her and she would rub her skin with it. It was seldom that she would rub her skin with any animal except that it died! Islam came and relieved people of the hardship of the pre-Islamic era, especially the woman, who was mistreated and wronged but Islam preserved her rights. In this Hadīth, a woman came seeking a legal ruling from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) as she told him that her daughter’s husband had died and that her daughter was in her mourning period, during which she had to abstain from adornment. However, she complained about some pain in her eyes. The woman asked whether there was a concession allowing her daughter to use Kohl. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No", repeating it in confirmation of his disapproval. Then he made a remark about the considerable shortness of the duration of a widow’s period of mourning as a veneration of the husband, which is four months and ten days. Then he wondered why women would not endure this short period that involved ease and comfort? In the pre-Islamic era, a widow would observe the mourning period in a small house, like a den in the wilderness, and for a full year she would abstain from adornment, perfume, water, and mixing with people, such that the filth and dirt would accumulate on her body, while being secluded from people. When her mourning period ended, she would be given a piece of dung, which she would then throw away, as an indication that what she went through of confinement, hardship and difficulty is as insignificant as that piece of dung when compared to her husband's huge right upon her. When Islam came, it replaced such a distress with favor, and such a difficulty with ease. However, women were too impatient to refrain from applying Kohl to their eyes. That is why no concession was granted to such a woman in this case, in order not to be a means leading to allowing adornment for a woman in her mourning period.

Understand this hadith

This Hadīth contains a severe warning for whoever uses vessels made of, coated with, or adorned with gold or silver. The horrible sound of the punishment of Hellfire would be heard in the bellies of those who do so. This is because this act involves imitating the disbelievers, arrogance, and breaking the hearts of the poor, while, indeed, Islam aims at safeguarding Muslims from extravagance and degeneration. This is also because both gold and sliver were, until recently, used as currencies; thus using them as vessels or antiques, etc. paralyzes the commercial system and unnecessarily impedes the fulfillment of required and essential needs. The prohibition in the Hadīth is not restricted to using these as vessels for food or drink; it rather extends to cover any other usage, unless permitted by Shariah like jewelry for women.

Understand this hadith

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that she braids her hair, so she asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) how to wash from major ritual impurity: must she undo her hair so that water reaches her scalp? The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that it is unnecessary for her to do so. Rather, it would be sufficient to pour three handfuls of water on her head and assume that the water reaches the roots of the hair, whether the water does reach the scalp or not, because if that was necessary, the braids would have to be undone. The Hadīth, however, does not suggest that. Three handfuls are not necessarily the exact number required; what is required is to let the water reach the roots of the hair. If it reaches them with one handful, then pouring three handfuls is an act of Sunnah. If it does not reach them even after three handfuls, then pouring more handfuls is obligatory until one believes that the hair is most probably soaked. To summarize, the Prophet instructed Umm Salamah not to undo her hair to wash from sex or menstruation. Pouring three handfuls of water on her head then pouring water over her whole body purifies her from major ritual impurity.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned that when the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) married her, he gave her two options to choose from. He would either stay seven nights with her and then stay the same number of nights with each of his other wives, or he would stay only three nights with her and then give each of his wives their normal nightly turns. Before giving her the choice, the Prophet preambled his excuse for the three-night option by informing Umm Salamah that she was dear to him, and that in no way was she inferior in his sight; so the three-night option was not because she had any deficiency, but because it was the right thing to do.
