Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that when a Muslim supplicates Allah and asks for something that is not sinful, like asking for the facilitation of sin or injustice, nor does he ask for severing ties of kinship, like supplicating against his children or relatives, then Allah will grant him, through his supplication, one of three things: He will either hasten the fulfillment of his supplication and grant him what he asked for. Or Allah Almighty will delay it as a reward for him on the Day of Judgment by being elevated in rank or receiving mercy and forgiveness of misdeeds. Or He will prevent harm, in proportion to his supplication, from befalling him in his worldly life. Thereupon, the Companions said to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): Then we should supplicate more to attain one of these advantages. He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: What Allah possesses is way more and greater than anything you could ask for, for His bounty is infinite and endless.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Muslim's supplication is answered and not rejected, provided that its conditions and etiquettes are fulfilled. Hence, one should engage diligently in supplication without being in a hurry for the answer.
  • Answering the supplication is not restricted to the fulfillment of the request; rather, it may result in the expiation of sins through his supplication or it could be stored for him in the Hereafter.
  • Ibn Bāz said: Persistence in supplication, having good expectations of Allah, and not losing hope are among the greatest causes for answering supplications. One should supplicate Allah persistently, have good expectations of Him, and realize that He is All-Wise and All-Knowing. Allah may hasten the response for a wise purpose, delay it for a wise purpose, or give the seeker something better than what he requested.

Understand this hadith

Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him: O Muhammad, are you suffering from illness? He said: Yes. So Gabriel recited Ruqyah on the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "In the Name of Allah" seeking His aid, "I recite Ruqyah over you" and seek refuge for you "from everything that harms you", whether small or big, "from the evil of every soul" that is malicious "or the eye of an envier" to afflict you, "may Allah cure you", guard you, and protect you from all diseases. "In the Name of Allah, I recite Ruqyah over you" is repeated for emphasis, and it begins and ends with it to signify that none can bring benefit or harm except Allah Almighty.

Lessons from the hadith
  • It is permissible to inform others about one's illness as a way of stating the reality of one's condition, not out of complaint or resentment.
  • Ruqyah (faith healing) is permissible with the following conditions: 1. It must be done using the Qur’an, or the remembrance of Allah Almighty, and prescribed supplications. 2. It must be in Arabic or in another language whose meaning is known and understood. 3. One must believe that Ruqyah does not have any effect on its own, but that it is merely a means, and that its effectiveness is only by the permission of Allah Almighty. 4. It must be free from any form of Shirk (polytheism), prohibited practices, innovations, or anything that leads to them.
  • Affirmation of the harm caused by the evil eye, and that it is real, thus one should seek Ruqyah (spiritual protection) against it.
  • It is recommended to perform Ruqyah with the supplication mentioned in the Hadīth.
  • The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), like other human beings, experienced what others experience, including illness.
  • Allah's care for His Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), His protection for him, and His appointing angels to guard him.

Understand this hadith

Zayd ibn Thābit relates that while they were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in a garden belonging to an Ansāri tribe called Banu An-Najjār, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his mule when it suddenly swerved from the path, startled and almost dropped him off its back. In that place there were four, five, or six graves, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who knows the buried people in these graves? A man replied: I know them. So he said: If you know them then when did they die? The man answered: They died in the days of polytheism. Then he said: This nation will be tested in their graves, then they will receive either bliss or torment; and if it was not for the fear that you would not bury your dead, I would invoke Allah to let hear some of the punishment of the grave that I hear, for if you hear it, you will cease burying your dead, due to the fear that the screams of the dead would pluck out your hearts, or the fear of exposing your relatives, that their affairs be known. Then he turned to his Companions and said: Ask Allah to protect you from the punishment of the Fire. They said: We seek Allah's protection from the punishment of the Fire. Then he said: Ask Allah to protect you from the punishment of the grave. They said: We seek protection and refuge of Allah from being afflicted with the punishment of the grave. Then he said: Ask Allah to protect you from trials, the apparent and the hidden thereof. They said: We seek protection of Allah from the apparent and hidden trials. Then he said: Ask Allah to protect you from the trial of the Anti-Christ, as he is the greatest trial that will lead to disbelief resulting in eternal punishment in the Fire. They said: We seek protection of Allah from the trial of the Anti-Christ.

The Prophet (ﷺ) was staying in seclusion inside a tent within his mosque, seeking closeness to Allah. He (ﷺ) heard his Companions reciting the Qur’an aloud with such loud voices that they were disturbing one another. So he uncovered the curtain of his tent and reproached those who were doing that, saying: All of you are conversing privately with your Lord through your recitation of the Qur’an. Therefore, do not harm one another, and let none of you raise his voice above another in recitation or in prayer.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The prohibition of raising one's voice while reciting the Qur’an if it causes harm or disturbance to others.
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) taught his Companions the proper manners of reciting the Qur’an.
