The one who maintains ties of kinship is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives; rather, he is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who severs the bond of kinship with him

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who maintains ties of kinship is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives; rather, he is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who severs the bond of kinship with him."

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentions that the one who perfectly maintains the ties of kinship and shows kindness to his relatives is not that person who repays kindness with kindness, but the one who truly and perfectly upholds kinship ties is the one with whom if the ties of kinship are severed, he maintains them; and if they do wrong to him, he responds to them with goodness.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Maintaining kinship ties in the Shariah is when you maintain the ties with those who sever them, forgive those who do wrong to you, and give to those who refuse to give to you; it is not about reciprocating goodness with goodness.
  • Ties with one's relatives are maintained by showing as much good to them as possible, in the form of money, supplication, commanding the right and forbidding the wrong, and so on, and by averting evil from them to the best of one's ability.

Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed

Narrator in the source: Anas

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed." A man said: O Messenger of Allah, I support him if he is oppressed, but how should I support him if he is an oppressor? He said: "Stop—or prevent—him from oppression. This is indeed supporting him."

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the Muslim to support his fellow Muslim, whether he is an oppressor or oppressed. A man then said: O Messenger of Allah, I support him if he is oppressed by removing the injustice from him, but what if he is the oppressor? How can I support him then? He said: Stop him, restrain him, and prevent him from committing injustice, for it is indeed supporting him against his devil and his own soul that commands evil.

Lessons from the hadith
  • A reminder of one of the rights of faith-based brotherhood among Muslims.
  • Restraining the oppressor and preventing him from committing injustice.
  • Islam stands in opposition to the concepts of the pre-Islamic era, where people would support one another whether they were oppressed or oppressors.

This Hadīth proves the virtue of mixing with people and socializing with them. It also proves that the believer who mixes and socializes with people, and who patiently bears any harm he may suffer as a result of offering them advice and guidance is better than the one who does not mix or socialize with people preferring to live alone. That is because the latter does not bear the people’s annoyance or harm.

The Ash‘aris, who are the people of Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) if they ran short of food or they were fighting for the sake of Allah, they would gather their food and divide it evenly among themselves. For this reason, they were most deserving to be ascribed to the Messenger of Allah, (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him); meaning that they belonged to him in terms of honor and love. He also belonged to them in terms of his adherence to these same great morals of altruism and obedience (to Allah).

News about the dispute among the people of Banu ‘Amr ibn ‘Awf reached the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and so he went to them, along with some of his Companions, to effect reconciliation between them

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not come back, and the time of the prayer was due. Bilāl went to Abu Bakr and said to him: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) has not come yet and the time of prayer is due. Could you lead the people in prayer?" Abu Bakr said: "Yes, if you wish." Bilāl pronounced the Iqāmah and Abu Bakr went forward and said Takbīr and the people said it after him. In the meantime, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came in crossing the rows (of the praying people) and stood in the (first) row and the people started clapping. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would never glance side-ways in his prayer, but when the people clapped much he looked back and saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) beckoned to him to carry on with the prayer. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hands and praised Allah, and retreated till he reached the (first) row. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the people in the prayer. When he completed the prayer, he faced the people and said: "O people, why did you start clapping when something unusual happened to you in the prayer? Clapping is only for women. So whoever among you comes across something in the prayer should say 'Subhān Allah' for there is none who will not turn around on hearing 'Subhān Allah'. O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from leading the people in the prayer when I beckoned to you to do so?" There was a dispute between the tribesmen of Banu ‘Amr ibn ‘Awf that reached the point of fighting, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of that. He went to them, with some of his Companions, and was late there while the time for prayer, i.e. the ‘Asr prayer, was due. Al-Bukhāri clarified this in his narration, the wording of which is: "And when the ‘Asr prayer was due, He called the Adhān and Iqāmah and asked Abu Bakr to step forward and lead the people in the prayer, and he did." Then Bilāl came to Abu Bakr and said: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) has not come yet and the time of prayer is due. Could you lead the people in prayer?" Abu Bakr said: "Yes, if you wish." Bilāl then pronounced the Iqāmah and Abu Bakr stepped forward and said Takbīr and so did the people. In the meantime, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came crossing the rows (in his narration, Al-Bukhāri added "splitting the rows"), and stood in the first row, according to the narration of Muslim which states: "crossing the rows until he stood in the first row". When the people realized that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was present with them, they began to clap their hands, out of their love for praying behind the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) heard their clapping, however he did not know the reason. Also, he would never glance sideways in his prayer due to his knowledge that it is forbidden, and that it is a furtive glance that the devil snatches from the slave during his prayer as mentioned by At-Tirmidhi and others. However, when the people clapped much more, he looked back (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was there. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) beckoned to him to carry on with leading the people in prayer, as stated in the narration of Al-Bukhāri: "He beckoned to him to remain in his place". Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) however, raised his hands and praised Allah, the Exalted, due to what he saw of the Prophet's (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) kind treatment of him, then he retreated a few steps back until he stood among the people being led in prayer. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the people in the prayer. When he completed the prayer, he faced the people and said: "O people, why did you start clapping when something unusual happened to you in the prayer? Clapping is only for women." Then he explained to them what was permissible for them to do when something happens to them during the prayer, saying: "Whoever among you comes across something in the prayer should say: 'Subhān Allah' for there is none who will not turn around on hearing 'Subhān-Allah.'" Then he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from leading the people in the prayer when I beckoned to you to do so?" Abu Bakr replied: "It is not proper for the son of Abu Quhāfah to lead the prayer in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did that out of his love, exaltation and reverence for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that Allah loves three qualities from His slaves and dislikes three. He loves from them the following: To worship Him alone and not to associate anything with Him, to hold fast to the covenant of Allah, the Qur’an, and the Sunnah of His Prophet, all together, and not to be separated from the Muslim community. He dislikes for them: idle talk and excessive speech about matters that do not concern them, asking about things that have not occurred, or asking people for their money and possessions without necessity, wasting money, spending it in ways other than its lawful uses, and putting it at risk of being lost.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Allah Almighty loves sincerity in worship from His slaves and dislikes disbelief in Him.
  • Encouraging adherence to and holding fast to the rope of Allah Almighty, as it leads to unity and harmony.
  • Encouraging the community, commanding adherence to it, unifying its ranks, and prohibiting its opposite, which is division and discord.
  • The prohibition of excessive talking about useless matters; because if it is permissible, it leads to the waste of time, and if it is forbidden, it increases sins.
  • The prohibition of engaging in gossip about people, tracking their conditions, and recounting their words and actions.
  • The prohibition of excessive asking for people's money.
  • The prohibition of wasting money, and the encouragement to preserve it for what is beneficial.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (ﷺ) asked his Companions: Shall I tell you of something that brings a greater reward than frequently performing voluntary fasting, prayer, and charity? They said: Yes. He said: It is reconciling between those in conflict, for disputes lead to division, estrangement, hatred, and turning away from one another. The enmity that results from discord is a trait that destroys and eradicates both religion and worldly life, just as a razor completely removes hair.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) used to ask his Companions questions and arouse their eagerness to know the answer.
  • At-Tībi said: This Hadīth encourages and urges reconciliation between people and the avoidance of causing discord, for reconciliation is a means of holding fast to the rope of Allah and preventing division among Muslims. Discord, on the other hand, is a breach in the religion; thus, whoever strives to mend it and remove its corruption attains a rank higher than that of one who fasts, prays, and is occupied only with his own personal worship.
