The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us with seven and forbade us from seven

Narrator in the source: Al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib

Al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us with seven and forbade us from seven: He commanded us to visit the sick, to follow the funeral, to say Tashmīt to the sneezer, to fulfill the oath, or the one making an oath, to support the oppressed, to respond to the inviter, and to spread the greeting of peace. He forbade us from rings—or from wearing rings—of gold, from drinking in silver, from Mayāthir, from Qassiy, and from wearing silk, Istabraq, and Dībāj.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the Muslims with seven qualities and forbade them from seven. The ones he commanded them with are: First: visiting the sick. Second: following funerals, participating in the prayer over the deceased, burying them, and supplicating for them. Third: supplicating for the one who sneezes and praises Allah by saying to him: May Allah have mercy upon you. Fourth: fulfilling the oath of the one who swears and believing him, meaning that if someone takes an oath about something and you are able to make it true, you should do so, so that he does not need to expiate his oath. Fifth: supporting the oppressed person by assisting him and preventing any harm inflicted upon him by the oppressor, to the best of your ability. Sixth: responding to the invitation for a meal, such as a wedding feast, ‘Aqīqah (animal sacrificed after the birth of a new baby), or other similar occasions. Seventh: spreading the greeting of peace, offering it, and responding to it. The ones he forbade them from are: First: wearing gold rings and taking it as an adornment. Second: drinking in silver vessels. Third: sitting on Mayāthir, which are rugs made of silk placed on the saddle of a horse or a camel's saddle. Fourth: wearing a garment made of linen mixed with silk, which is called "Qassiy". Fifth: wearing silk. Sixth: wearing Istabraq, which is thick silk. Seventh: wearing Dībāj, which is the best and most precious type of silk.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Clarifying some of the rights of a Muslim over his fellow Muslim.
  • The basic rule is that everything in the Shariah, whether commandments or prohibitions, applies to both men and women unless it is specified as being a characteristic of men or a characteristic of women.
  • Other Hadīths indicate that women are prohibited from following funerals.
  • Other Hadīths indicate that it is permissible for women to wear gold and silk.

Understand this hadith

Al-Barā ibn ‘Āzib (may Allah be pleased with him) describes the Prophet's prayer as he watched him closely to learn how he prayed and follow his example. He mentioned that all the Prophet's postures were in proportion. So, his standing for recitation and sitting for the Tashahhud were proportional to bowing, standing up after bowing, and prostration. He would not prolong his standing and shorten his bowing, nor would he prolong his prostration and shorten his standing. Rather, he would keep each posture commensurate with others. This does not mean that his standing and sitting for Tashahhud were exactly equal in length to his bowing and prostration. It means that he would not shorten one and prolong the other.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) recited Sūrat At-Tīn, which is a short Sūrah, in the first Rak‘ah of the ‘Ishā prayer, because he was on a journey. While traveling, one should be keen on making things easier because of the hardship of traveling. Even though the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, he didn't abandon what evokes humility and attentiveness of the heart in prayer when listening to the Qur'an, which is beautifying one's voice with the recitation of the Qur'an in prayer.

Understand this hadith

The believer is questioned in the grave by the two angels assigned with this task, namely Munkar and Nakīr, whose names are mentioned in several Hadīths. The believer testifies that none is worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that this is the firm word about which Allah Almighty says: {Allah keeps those who believe steadfast with the firm Word [of faith] in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.} [Surat Ibrāhīm: 27]

Lessons from the hadith
  • The questioning in the grave is true.
  • Allah bestows His favor upon His believing slaves in this worldly life and in the Hereafter by keeping them steadfast with the firm word.
  • The merit of the testimony of Tawhīd (monotheism) and of dying upon it.
  • Allah keeps the believer steadfast in this worldly life through steadfastness in faith and adherence to the straight path, and at the time of death through death upon Tawhīd, and in the grave when being questioned by the two angels.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "The sheep which you have slaughtered is just a sheep (slaughtered) for meat (i.e. not a ritual sacrifice)." He (Abu Burdah) said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have a young she-goat which is dearer to me than two sheep. Will that be valid as a sacrifice for me?" The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon on the Day of Eid al-Ad'ha after having offered the prayer. He explained the rulings of slaughtering and its prescribed time on the day of Eid to the Companions. He added that whoever offered prayer and sacrificed in the same manner as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did, his ritual would be properly observed. However, if someone slaughtered his animal before the prescribed time of slaughtering started, then his sacrifice would be considered normal slaughtering for the sake of meat, and not an accepted rite or act of worship. When Abu Burdah heard this, he asked: "O Messenger of Allah, I slaughtered my sheep before the prayer. I know that today is a day of eating and drinking, so I liked to have my sheep as the first thing to be slaughtered at my home. I slaughtered it and ate before coming to the prayer." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told him that this was not the prescribed sacrifice and that it would be considered as an animal slaughtered to make use of its meat only. Abu Burdah then told the Prophet that he had a young she-goat which was dearer to him than two sheep; and he asked if slaughtering it would be considered a valid sacrifice for the sake of Allah? The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, but this ruling is for you exclusively and is not generalized for the rest of the Ummah, as a little she-goat is not valid for sacrifice until it has completed one year of age.

The Hadīth means that one should adorn the Qur'an by beautifying the voice when reciting it, as the good words increase their goodness and excellence when communicated in a beautiful voice. The wisdom behind this is to encourage extra contemplation of the meanings of the Qur‘an and a deeper understanding of the commandments, prohibitions, warnings, and glad tidings included in the recited verses. People naturally incline to a beautiful voice and the mind can be cleared of all distracting thoughts by virtue it, and in turn it draws the full attention to listening to and reflecting on the Qur'an. As a result, the main purpose of humility and submission would be achieved. Beautifying the voice, as mentioned in the Hadīth, refers to a beautiful recitation that brings humility, not to tainting the recitation with melodious music that violates the limits of recitation.

The bliss and torment of the grave in the Hadīth of Al-Barā' ibn ‘Āzib

Narrator in the source: Al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib

Al-Barā' ibn ‘Āzib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in a funeral procession of a man from the Ansār. We came to the grave and the niche had not yet been dug out. So the Messenger sat and we sat around him, as if we had birds upon our heads (very alert), and he had a stick in his hand with which he was striking the ground. He raised his head and said: "Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave," two or three times. In another narration, this is added: “He hears the footfalls of their sandals when they go away, and it is said to him: ‘O you! Who is your Lord, what is your religion, and who is your prophet?’” Hanād said: “He said: ‘Then, two angels come to him and make him sit up. They will say to him: ‘Who is your Lord?’ He will say: ‘My Lord is Allah.’ They will say: ‘What is your religion?’ He will say: ‘My religion is Islam.’ They will say: ‘Who is this man who was sent amongst you?’ He will say: ‘He is the Messenger of Allah.’ They will say: ‘How did you come to know that?’ He will say: ‘I read the Book of Allah, believed in it, and attested to it.’” In another narration, Jarīr adds: "This is the statement of Allah, the Almighty: {Allah keeps firm those who believe.} [Sūrat Ibrahīm: 27]” “Then a caller will call from Heaven: ‘Indeed, my slave has spoken the truth, so spread a place for him in Paradise, open a door to Paradise for him, and dress him in the clothes of Paradise. Some of its fragrance and scent will come to him. A space as far as his eyes can see will be opened for him in it." Then, regarding the disbeliever, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) talked about his death and said: “And his soul will be restored to his body, and two angels will come and make him sit up. They will say: ‘Who is your Lord?’ He will say: ‘Ah, ah, I do not know!’ They will say: ‘What is your religion?’ He will say: ‘Ah, ah, I do not know!’ They will say: ‘Who is this man who was sent amongst you?’ He will say: ‘Ah, ah, I do not know!’ Then, a caller will call from the heaven: ‘He has lied, so spread a place for him in Hellfire, open a door to Hellfire for him, and dress him in the clothes of Hellfire.’ So some of its heat and scorching air will reach him, and his grave will be so compressed for him that his ribs will be crushed together.” It is added in the narration by Jarīr: “Then a blind and mute angel will come to him, holding an iron sledge hammer, which, if a mountain was struck with it, it would turn it into dust. He will give him such a strike with it that it will be heard by whatever lies between the east and west, except mankind and the Jinn, and he will turn into dust. His spirit will then be restored to him."

Al-Barā' ibn ‘Āzib (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that they went out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to follow a man from the Ansār’s funeral procession and they arrived at his graveside before he was buried. So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and they sat around him quietly and silently, out of respect for him. In his hand was a stick with which he was striking the ground, like one who is deep in thought. Then he raised his head and said: “Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave,” repeating it two or three times. He then informed them that the deceased hears the sound of his mourners' sandals when they depart from him, and meanwhile, two angels come to him, make him sit up, and they say to him: “Who is your Lord?” He will say: “My Lord is Allah.” They will say: “What is your religion?” He will say: “My religion is Islam.” They will say: “Who is this man who was sent amongst you?” He will say: “He is the Messenger of Allah.” They will say: “How did you come to know that?” He will say: “I read the Book of Allah, believed in it, and attested to it.” The ability of his tongue to give these answers easily is the intended meaning of the verse that reads: {Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word} [Sūrat Ibrahīm: 27]. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then said: “Then a caller will call from Heaven: ‘Indeed, my slave has spoken the truth”, and he held this belief in worldly life, and so he deserves to be honored", so spread a place for him in Paradise, open a door to Paradise for him, and dress him in the clothes of Paradise. It will be opened for him and “…some of its fragrance and scent will come to him. A space as far as his eyes can see will be opened for him in it…” Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the disbeliever’s severe death, saying that his soul will be restored to his body after his burial and two angels will come to him, make him sit up, and say to him: “Who is your Lord?” In a state of confusion, he will say: “Ah, ah, I do not know!” They will further ask: “What is your religion?” He will say: “Ah, ah, I do not know!” They will say: “What do you say concerning this man who was sent amongst you? Is he a prophet or not?” He will say: “Ah, ah, I do not know!” So a caller will call out from the heaven: “This disbeliever has lied. His disbelief and lack of faith have led him to these lies. Indeed, the religion of Allah, the Almighty, and the prophet-hood of Muhammad spread far and wide and reached every corner of the globe. So set an abode for him in Hellfire, dress him like the inhabitants of Hellfire, and open for him a door to Hellfire. Consequently, some of its heat will reach him and his grave will be so compressed that his ribs will be crushed together and they will no longer have the sound form they once had. After that, a blind and mute angel will be sent to him, carrying a huge iron sledge-hammer that would turn a mountain into dust if struck by it. Using the sledge-hammer, the angel will strike him with such a blow that it will be heard by everything between the east and west, except for the Jinn and mankind. His soul will then be restored to his body, so he may taste the torment, and his torment in the grave will endure.
