Understand this hadith

In this Hadīth, ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the Duha Prayer as four Rak‘ahs, making Taslīm after every two Rak‘ahs. She also mentioned that he would sometimes pray more than four Rak‘ahs, according to his ability and how active he felt.

‘Abdullāh ibn Shaqīq (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I asked ‘Ā'ishah: "Did the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pray the Duha prayer?" She said: "No, unless he came back from being away."

عن عبد الله بن شَقيق، قال: قُلت لعائشة: هل كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يُصلِّي الضُّحَى؟ قالت: «لا، إلا أن يَجِيء من مَغِيبِه».
Understand this hadith

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked whether the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the Duha prayer. She said that he only prayed it when he returned from a journey. This shows that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was not a consistent observant of the Duha prayer. He would pray it occasionally, but not consistently, so it would not be made obligatory on the Muslims, as some narrations indicate. However, there are other Hadīth which suggest that one may observe the Duha prayer regularly.

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would give up a deed, even though he liked to perform it, for fear that people would follow him and perform it, and it would thus become obligatory for them. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) never prayed the Duha prayer, but I offer it.

عن عائشة رضي الله عنها ، قالت: «إنْ كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لَيَدَعُ العمل، وهو يُحِبُّ أن يعملَ به خَشْيَة أن يعملَ به الناس، فَيُفْرَضَ عليهم، وما سَبَّح رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سُبْحَة الضُّحى قَطُّ وإنِّي لَأُسَبِّحُهَا».

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would give up a deed, even though he liked to perform it, for fear that people would follow him and perform it, and it would thus become obligatory for them, and this might prove difficult for them. Then, she says that the Prophet would not perform the Duha prayer, but the scholars took this negation to refer to lack of regular performance; that is the Prophet would offer it sometimes, for its merit, and abandon it at other times lest it might beccome obligatory for people, as she mentions early in the Hadīth.

The prayer of the oft-returning to Allah is when weaned camels are bitten by excessive heat

Narrator in the source: Zayd ibn Arqam reported: I only say to you what the Messenger of Allah used to say. He used to say:

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he saw some people pray in the forenoon, so he said: "They know that praying at an hour other than this one is better, for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The prayer of the oft-returning to Allah is when weaned camels are bitten by excessive heat.'"

Understand this hadith

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) saw some people pray in the forenoon, so he said that he heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say that the prayer of the oft-returning to Allah is when the heat is so scorching that the hooves of little camels burn on the ground. That is the best time to pray the Duha prayer for those who obey Allah and often return to Him.
