Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed out the sign that marks the beginning and end of the month of Ramadan, saying: Fast when you see the crescent of Ramadan, but if the clouds prevent you from seeing it, then count thirty days for the month of Sha‘bān. Break your fast when you see the crescent of Shawwāl, but if the clouds prevent you from seeing it, then count thirty days for the month of Ramadan.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Sighting the crescent, not the calculations, is what counts in affirming the beginning of the lunar month.
  • Ibn al-Mundhir reported scholarly consensus that fasting is not obligatory if the beginning of the month of Ramadan is determined only by calculations without sighting the crescent.
  • It is obligatory to complete Sha‘bān thirty days in case the crescent of Ramadan cannot be seen due to clouds or the like.
  • The lunar month is either twenty-nine or thirty days.
  • It is obligatory to complete Ramadan for thirty days in case the crescent of Shawwāl cannot be seen due to clouds or the like.
  • Whoever finds himself in a place where there is none to check on Muslims' affairs in fasting, or he does not pay attention to this, then he should be careful about it and should seek it through someone who affirms it either by sighting it himself or by sighting it by one whom he trusts, and he can thus fast and break his fast accordingly.

Understand this hadith

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) mentioned that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took him by the shoulder—the part that joins the arm with the shoulder—and said to him, Be in this world as if you are a stranger who arrived at a country where he has no house to shelter him and no one to keep his accompany. He is away from family, children, and relationships that are the cause behind one's distraction from the Creator. Rather, be more than a stranger, i.e., a wayfarer who passes by the way seeking his homeland. This is because the stranger may live in a foreign land and reside therein, unlike the wayfarer who passes by swiftly without stopping and whose main concern is to reach his homeland. Just as a traveler needs nothing beyond what helps him reach his destination, a believer needs nothing in this world beyond what helps him reach his destination in the Hereafter. Ibn ‘Umar acted upon this advice, and he used to say: If you reach the morning, do not wait for the evening; and if you reach the evening, do not wait for the morning, and count yourself among the grave dwellers. Given the fact that health and sickness are inevitable in one's life, then hasten to obedience when you are in good health before getting sick, and take advantage of your health in performing righteous acts before being prevented by sickness. Take advantage of your life in this world and do everything that could benefit you after your death.

Lessons from the hadith
  • A teacher may put his hand on his student's shoulder as he instructs him as an expression of cordiality and to attract his attention.
  • One may offer advice and guidance to those who do not ask for it.
  • The Prophet's excellent approach in teaching by making convincing comparisons, as he said: "Be in this world as if you are a stranger or a wayfarer."
  • People vary in their advance towards the Hereafter, bearing in mind that the status of the wayfarer is higher than that of the stranger in terms of asceticism.
  • One should have simple ambitions in this world and should be prepared for death.
  • The Hadīth does not denote the renunciation of sustenance or the prohibition of worldly pleasures; rather, it denotes asceticism in such things and consuming less thereof.
  • Hastening to righteous deeds before one is unable to perform them due to sickness or death.
  • The merit of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) as he was influenced by this advice from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
  • Paradise is the believer's homeland; hence, he is a stranger in this world and a traveler to the Hereafter. He does not allow his heart to be attached to anything of this foreign land; rather, his heart is attached to his homeland, to which he will return. His stay in this world is to fulfill his needs and get prepared to return to his homeland.

Understand this hadith

The practice of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) proves that drinking while standing is permissible, because the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) approved it. It is better, however, that man eats and drinks while s/he is seated, because this was the practice of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). He neither ate nor drank while standing. It was authentically reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade drinking in a standing position. The Hadīth in question, however, indicates that drinking in a standing position is not absolutely prohibited; rather, doing so is not the proper attitude. In other words, it is better and more perfect that one drinks and eats in a seated position; however, it is permissible to do so while standing.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs that Jibrīl continued to instruct him that the neighbor, who lives next to one's house, be he a Muslim or a disbeliever, should be taken care of, not hurt, and treated kindly, his rights should be observed, and harm from them should be endured, to the extent that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) thought, due to the great attention given to the neighbor's rights and Jibrīl's repeated instruction about this, that there will come down revelation that gives his neighbor part of his inheritance after his death.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Hadīth points out the significance of the neighbor's rights and the duty to observe them.
  • The repeated instruction regarding the neighbor's rights entails that we should honor him, treat him in a kind and benevolent manner, avert harm from him, visit him if he gets sick, congratulate him upon the occurrence of something pleasant, and give him solace upon affliction.
  • The closer the neighbor's door is, the greater the emphasis upon his right.
  • The Hadīth shows the perfection of the Shariah and its teachings that achieve the well-being of society, such as kindness to the neighbors and averting harm from them.

Understand this hadith

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that he accompanied the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on his journeys and that he accompanied Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthmān (may Allah be pleased with them) in their travels as well, and all of them used to shorten the four-Rak‘ah prayers into two and never exceeded this number of Rak‘ahs. In other words, they never offered four Rak‘ahs in the obligatory prayers and never performed the supererogatory prayers while on a journey. He mentioned Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthmān to prove that this ruling was not abrogated – rather, it was applied after the death of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) – and that there is no preponderant objection to that ruling. It is permissible to not shorten the prayer on a journey; however, shortening is preferable, for Allah, the Almighty, says: {When you are on a journey, it is no sin to shorten your prayers.} [Sūrat An-Nisā': 101] The negation of sin here implies that this is a concession and not the original ruling, which is praying the four Rak‘ahs. It is preferable for the traveler to act upon that concession and shorten the prayer in order to comply with the Sunnah of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and avoid the relevant difference in opinion among the scholars, as some of them considered it obligatory, and because it is the opinion preferred by the majority of the scholars.

It was the habit of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and the rightly guided caliphs to lead the Eid prayer in both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Ad'ha, then they would give the sermon. They would pray first then give the sermon, and Muslims kept doing so until Marwān's era came, so he rose over the pulpit and gave the sermon before the prayer.

This Hadīth includes two of the etiquettes related to gatherings: 1. It is not permissible for one person to make another leave the place he is sitting in - which he got to before him - and then sit in it. 2. It is obligatory for those who are present to spread out to find a place for a newcomer among them. Allah, the Exalted, says (what means): {O you who believe! When you are told to make room in the assemblies, spread out and make room and Allah will give you ample room.} [Sūrat al-Mujādilah: 11]

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs that whoever imitates some people - disbelievers, sinners, or righteous - by engaging in any of their peculiar traits, such as their creeds, acts of worship, or habits, becomes one of them. This is because outward imitation of them leads to inward imitation. In fact, imitation of any people indicates admiration of them, and it may result in loving, respecting, and inclining toward them, which may also prompt a person to even imitate them inwardly and in their worship - Allah forbid.

Lessons from the hadith
  • We are warned of imitating disbelievers and wicked people.
  • We are urged to imitate the righteous and follow in their footsteps.
  • Outward imitation brings about inward love.
  • A person will be sinful and worthy of punishment in accordance with the type and degree of his imitation of them.
  • The prohibition regarding the imitation of the disbelievers pertains to their religion and peculiar habits. Other things, like learning professions and so on, do not fall under this prohibition.
