Scholars agreed that fasting on the Day of ‘Āshūrā' is an act of Sunnah (recommended) and not obligatory, and they differed regarding its ruling during the early days of Islam when fasting on it was legislated before the fasting of Ramadan was ordained. Was fasting the Day of ‘Āshūrā' at that time obligatory or not? So, considering the correctness of the view that it was obligatory at that time, then its obligation has been abrogated with other authentic Hadīths, such as the following: ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that Quraysh used to fast on the Day of ‘Āshūrā' in the pre-Islamic times, then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered fasting on it until Ramadan was made obligatory to fast. In another Hadīth, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes may fast on it, and whoever wishes may not fast."

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate Allah saying: "My Lord, support me", i.e. guide me to remember You, thank You, and perfect my worship of You. "And do not support someone against me", i.e. do not empower someone who will prevent me from Your obedience, from the devils -mankind or the Jinn- over me. "Grant me victory and do not grant others victory over me", i.e. grant me victory over the disbelievers, and do not grant them victory over me; or grant me victory over my inner self, as it is my worst enemy, and do not grant victory to my inner self that incites evilness against me, such that I follow my desires and turn away from the guidance. "Plan for me and do not plan against me", i.e. plot against my enemies who are plotting, and bring them down from where they do not imagine, and do not do that to me. Plotting is from the attributes that describe Allah's actions, however He is not described with it in an absolute sense, rather, He is described with it as a form of praise, for example when He plots against the disbelievers and those who plot against the believers and so on. It is not correct to negate the attribute of plotting from Allah, the Exalted, because He affirmed it for Himself. Therefore, we affirm it for Him in a manner that befits His majesty. "And guide me and make my guidance easy for me", i.e. lead me to all goodness and facilitate for me following guidance or the ways that lead to it, so that obedience is not hard for me and I do not become distracted from worship. "And grant me victory against whoever wronged me", i.e. support me against the one who oppresses me and transgresses against me. "O Allah, make me grateful to You", i.e. for Your blessings; "remembering You", in all times; "fearful of You", i.e. afraid in good times and hard times; "obedient to You", i.e. persistent obedience; "and humble to You", i.e. submissive and modest; "returning to You in repentance", i.e. as repentance is returning to obedience after disobedience. "O Lord, accept my repentance", i.e. make it sound with its conditions and manners so that it will be accepted. "Wash away my sins", i.e. erase my sins. "Answer my supplication", i.e. my invocations. "Establish my proof", i.e. against your enemies in this world, or make my words and my belief firm in this world and while answering the two angels (in the grave). "Guide my heart, make my tongue speak the truth", i.e. correct and straighten up my tongue so that it only utters the truth. "And take resentment away from my heart", i.e. take out of my heart the cheating, resentment, jealousy, envy and those kinds of evil morals that emanate from the heart and inhabit it.

On the day of (the battle of) Badr, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the polytheists, who were one thousand (fighters), while his Companions were three hundred and nineteen

Narrator in the source: Ibn ‘Abbās

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: On the day of (the battle of) Badr, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the polytheists, who were one thousand (fighters), while his Companions were three hundred and nineteen. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the Qiblah, stretched his hands up, and started calling upon his Lord: "O Allah, fulfill for me what You have promised to me. O Allah, accomplish what You have promised to me. O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed, You will not be worshiped on earth." He continued his supplication to his Lord while raising his hands and facing the Qiblah until his mantle slipped down from his shoulders. So Abu Bakr came to him, picked up his mantle, and put it back on his shoulders. Then he embraced him from behind and said: "O Prophet, you have sufficiently prayed to your Lord, and He will fulfill for you what He has promised you." So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {When you appealed to your Lord for help, He responded to your call (saying): I will help you with one thousand angels coming in succession} [Sūrat al-Anfāl: 9]. So Allah supported him with angels." Abu Zumayl reported that Ibn ‘Abbās told him: "On that day, a Muslim was chasing a disbeliever who was running in front of him, he heard the sound of a whip from above, and the voice of a rider, saying: 'Go ahead, Hayzūm.' He glanced at the polytheist, who had (then) fallen down on his back. When he looked at him, there was a scar on his nose, and his face was torn as if it had been lashed with a whip, and it all turned purple. The Ansāri (man from the Ansār came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and related this (incident) to him. He said: 'You have told the truth. This was help from the third heaven.' On that day (the day of the battle of Badr), the Muslims killed seventy disbelievers and captured seventy as captives. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Bakr and ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them): 'What is your opinion regarding these captives?' Abu Bakr said: 'They are our kith and kin. I think you charge them a ransom (in return for releasing them), which (the ransom) will be a source of strength to us against the disbelievers. Perhaps, Allah will guide them to Islam.' Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'What is your opinion, O Ibn al-Khattāb?' He said: 'No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not agree with the opinion of Abu Bakr. I am of the opinion that you should hand them over to us so that we cut off their heads. Hand over ‘Aqīl to ‘Ali to cut off his head, and hand over such-and-such relative to me to cut off his head. These are the leaders of the disbelief and its veterans.' ‘Umar noted: 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) favored the opinion of Abu Bakr and did not favor what I had said. The next day, when I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) I found that both he and Abu Bakr were sitting and crying. I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, why are you and your companion crying? Tell me the reason. For I will cry, or I will at least pretend to cry in sympathy with you.’ The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I cry for what has been offered to your companions of taking the ransom (from the prisoners). I was shown the punishment to which they will be subjected. It was brought to me as close as this tree.’ Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {It is not befitting for a Prophet that he should take prisoners until the force of the disbelievers has been crushed...} [Sūrat al-Anfāl: 67] {so eat of what you have gained of the spoils of war, (it is) lawful and pure} [Sūrat al-Anfāl: 69]. So Allah made war spoils lawful for them."

When it was the battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the polytheists, who were numbered one thousand fighters, whereas his Companions consisted of only three hundred and nineteen men. As the Muslims were a minority compared to the disbelievers, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) turned toward the Qiblah and raised his hands to the heaven, audibly invoking Allah: "O Allah, fulfill for me what You have promised to me. O Allah, accomplish what You have promised to me. O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed, You will not be worshiped on earth." He continued his prayer until his cloak fell off his shoulders. Abu Bakr picked it up and put it back on the Prophet's shoulders, embracing him from behind and telling him that he made sufficient invocation to Allah, Who would fulfill His promise of victory to the Prophet. Hence, Allah, the Almighty, revealed: {When you appealed to your Lord for help, He responded to your call (saying): I will help you with one thousand angels coming in succession} [Sūrat al-Anfāl: 9]. This means that Allah would provide the believers with a thousand fighters among the angels who would be sent one after another to support the believers in their fight against the polytheists. Ibn ‘Abbās mentioned that while a Muslim man from among the Ansār was chasing a disbeliever to kill him, he heard a crack of a whip and the voice of a horseman saying "Go ahead, Hayzūm." The Ansāri looked to find the infidel on the ground with the trace of a whip on his nose and a rupture across his face. The Ansāri told the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) about that, and the Prophet told him that this was an angel from the third heaven and that Hayzūm was the name of that angel's horse. On that day, the Muslims killed seventy disbelievers and took another seventy as captives. Concerning the captives, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Abu Bakr and ‘Umar on what to do with them. Abu Bakr opined that those were the Muslims' relatives and kin, and therefore the Prophet should take a financial ransom and release them. The ransom would support the Muslims in their subsequent fights against the disbelievers. Abu Bakr added that, perhaps, Allah would guide them to Islam. ‘Umar, however, did not agree with Abu Bakr's opinion and opined that the Muslims should kill them and the Prophet should ask each Muslim to kill his relative among these captives, for they were the leaders of disbelief and the heads of misguidance. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) inclined to Abu Bakr's suggestion rather than that of ‘Umar. One day later, ‘Umar found the Prophet and Abu Bakr crying. He asked why they were crying, for if there was a reason for crying, he would join them in it, and if not, then he would pretend to cry in sympathy with them. The Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told him that they were crying because Allah spoke of the punishment of those who spoke of accepting the ransom from the captive disbelievers; the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to a tree near him and said that the punishment was presented closer than that tree. In this regard, Allah, the Almighty, revealed: {It is not befitting for a Prophet that he should take prisoners until the force of the disbelievers has been crushed...} [Sūrat al-Anfāl: 67] to the end of the verse: {So eat of what you have gained of the spoils of war, (it is) lawful and pure} [Sūrat al-Anfāl: 69]. This means that it is not appropriate for a Prophet, while fighting the disbelievers who want to extinguish the light of Allah and extirpate Islam, to hasten to arrest them and keep them alive to collect their ransom. Such ransom is of little value compared with the benefit of eradicating them and ending their evil. As long as those infidels were strong enough to act maliciously and threaten the Muslims, it was not appropriate to take them as captives. However, if they were incapable of doing evil, it would be fine to arrest them and keep them alive. Then Allah declared the riches that the Muslims take from the disbelievers by force in war to be lawful for them.

Narrator in the source: Ibn ‘Abbās

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) commented about the verse: {Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an} [Sūrat al-Qiyāmah: 16], saying: "The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to experience hardship while the revelation was being sent down upon him, and he used to move his lips (quickly) with what was being revealed to him." Ibn ‘Abbās moved his lips saying: "I am moving my lips in front of you as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to move his." Sa‘īd (the sub-narrator) also moved his lips saying: "I am moving my lips just as I saw Ibn ‘Abbās moving his." Ibn ‘Abbās added: "So Allah revealed the following verses: {Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an. Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.} [Sūrat al-Qiyāmah: 16-17] which means that Allah will make him (the Prophet) remember the portion of the Qur'an which was revealed to him at that time by heart and recite it. Then the verse that followed these two was: {So when We have recited it [through Jibrīl], then follow its recitation} [Sūrat al-Qiyāmah: 18] It means ''listen to it and be silent. Then, it is (for Allah) to make you recite it." Afterwards, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to listen to Jibrīl whenever he came to him, and after his departure he used to recite it just as Jibrīl taught him to recite it."

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to experience hardship and intense stress while the revelation was being sent down upon him. He used to move his lips with what he received from Jibrīl before Jibrīl had finished the revelation, fearing that he would not be able to memorize it before Jibrīl left. Ibn ‘Abbās described to his student Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr how the Prophet moved his lips. This indicates that Ibn ‘Abbās had seen the Prophet in that state. Sa‘īd, likewise, described it to his students. Allah, the Exalted, sent down a verse commanding the Prophet not to move his tongue with the Qur'an to hasten in receiving it, for Allah ensured that the Qur'an would be collected in the Prophet's heart. Then, Allah, the Almighty, revealed another verse telling the Prophet to listen attentively when Jibrīl recited the Qur'an to him, for Allah ensured that the Prophet would recite it just as Jibrīl had recited it. Later on, when Jibrīl came to the Prophet with revelation, the Prophet would listen to him, and when Jibrīl had departed, the Prophet would read the Qur'an as Jibrīl taught him to read it.

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I saw, in a dream tonight, a cloud from which butter and honey were dribbling; and I saw people collecting from these with their hands, some getting much and some little. And there was a rope extending from the earth to the sky, and I saw that you (the Prophet) held it and went up, and then another man held it and went up, and then another held it and went up. Thereafter, another man held it, but it was cut and then got connected again. Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, I ransom you with my father, I ask you by Allah to let me interpret this dream." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, 'Interpret it.' Abu Bakr said: "The cloud is Islam. The butter and honey dribbling from it are the Qur’an. Its sweetness dribbles, and people take much or little from it. The rope which extends from the sky to the earth is the truth which you (the Prophet) are upon. You follow it and Allah raises you high, and then another man follows it and rises up because of it, and another person follows it, and then another man follows it but [the rope] is cut, and then it is connected for him and he rises up with it. O Messenger of Allah, I ransom you with my father, am I right or wrong?' The Prophet replied: "You are right about some of it and wrong about some." Abu Bakr said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, tell me about what I was wrong." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not swear."

A man came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and told him that in his dream, he saw a cloud that was raining butter and honey, and people were taking thereof with their hands. Some took a lot of it, and others took little. He also saw a rope extending from the earth to the sky. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the rope and went up. Another two men did the same. A fourth man did the same, but the rope was cut and and then reconnected, so he finally managed to ascend. On hearing that, Abu Bakr swore that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) should let him interpret the dream. He allowed him to do so. So Abu Bakr said that the cloud refers to Islam, for the cloud gives shade, protection, and blesses humans with its rain with the permission of Allah; and so does Islam: it protects from harm and destruction and brings bliss to one's life and afterlife. Abu Bakr further said that the honey and butter represent the Qur’an, which drips sweetness. Some people learn much, and others learn little of it. The rope that goes from the earth to the sky is the truth that the Prophet follows, and thus Allah raises him by means of it. Then a man takes the rope and rises up. This man was Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) for he would maintain the truth among the Muslims after the Prophet's death. Then another man, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb, takes hold of the rope and rises. Then a third man, ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān, takes hold of the rope and rises. The rope here breaks, signifying the killing of ‘Uthmān or the tribulations that occur to him. Then the rope is connected again, meaning that the caliphate devolves to ‘Ali. Then Abu Bakr wondered if he was right or wrong in his interpretation. So the Prophet told him that he was right about parts and wrong about other parts. It was said that Abu Bakr was wrong in that he interpreted butter and honey as the Qur’an alone. As these are two things, he should have interpreted them as representing the Qur’an and the Sunnah, for the Sunnah explains the Qur’an. It is by means of both the Qur’an and the Sunnah that rulings attain perfection, just as pleasure is perfected by consuming both butter and honey together. It is further argued that the right interpretation is that the cloud refers to the Prophet and the honey and butter refer the Qur’an and the Sunnah. A third interpretation is that butter and honey represent knowledge and practicing, or understanding and memorizing. It is safer, some said: not to try to figure out what Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) got wrong in interpreting the dream, because the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) kept silent on that. Then Abu Bakr took an oath upon that the Prophet should tell him the parts about which he made mistakes, but the Prophet asked him not to take another oath on that, as he had already taken an oath before. The Prophet did not fulfill Abu Bakr's oath that time, for oaths should be fulfilled only when there is no subsequent evident harm or hardship. The harm resulting from fulfilling Abu Bakr's oath in this regard was that the Prophet would have mentioned that the rope would be cut by the killing of ‘Uthmān as well as the civil disorders that would arise during his time. So the Prophet hated to mention them so that such bad news would not spread.

I have not been ordered to build lofty mosques

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have not been ordered to build lofty mosques." Ibn ‘Abbās added: "You will surely adorn them as the Jews and Christians did (with their synagogues and churches)."

Understand this hadith

The meaning of the 'Tashyeed' of the mosques here is building high and lofty mosques, as Al-Baghawi said. However, there is nothing wrong with building and strengthening the mosque and perfecting its construction in a professional way, yet without decoration, embellishment, and adornment; so long as it does not involve ostentation, showing off and seeking fame. This is supported by the Hadīth of ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān: "Whoever builds a mosque for the sake of Allah, Allah builds for him the like of it in Paradise." The mosque of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was made from adobe, its roof from palm branches, and its pillars from palm timber. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not add anything to it. When the wood and palm branches began to rot during the caliphate of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) he restored it to its original construction and added to it. During the caliphate of ‘Uthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) he added a lot to it, building its walls from stones and plaster, and making its pillars from stones and its roof from oak, thus adding to it what would strengthen it, not adorn it. All what he did was for stabilization and plastering, without embellishment and adornment. As for the engraved stones, they were not engraved by his command; rather, they simply happened to be engraved. Those who were not pleased with his act from among the Companions had no evidence supporting its (engraved stone) prohibition except the encouragement to follow the example of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) as well as that of ‘Umar, in the construction of the mosque while avoiding luxuries. Yet, it does not entail prohibition or dislike of strengthening mosques.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that Allah commanded him to prostrate in prayer on seven body parts, which are: First: The forehead, i.e., the upper part of the face above the nose and eyes. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand to his nose to clarify that the forehead and the nose represent one part of the seven and to stress the fact that one must touch the ground with his nose in prostration. The second and third parts: The two hands. The fourth and fifth: The knees. The sixth and seventh: The toes of both feet. He commanded us not to tie our hair or fold up our clothes when prostrating on the ground to protect them; rather, we should let them spread out and fall on the ground to prostrate along with the body parts.

Lessons from the hadith
  • It is a must in prayer to prostrate on the seven parts.
  • It is disliked to tuck up and fold back the clothes and hair in prayer.
  • The one praying must maintain his composure during his prayer by placing the seven parts included in Sujūd (prostration) on the ground and resting on them until he recites the prescribed Dhikr (remembrance of Allah).
  • The prohibition of folding back the hair is exclusively prescribed for men apart from women, who are commanded to cover themselves in prayer.
