Do what you are capable of doing (regularly). By Allah, Allah never grows weary (of giving rewards) until you grow weary (of doing good deeds)

Narrator in the source: ‘Ā’ishah, Mother of the Believers, reported saying:

‘Ā’ishah, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her) and wife of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), reported: Al-Hawlā’ bint Tuwayt ibn Habīb ibn Asad ibn ‘Abdul-‘Uzza passed by while I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). So I said: This is Al-Hawlā’ bint Tuwayt, and they claim that she does not sleep at night. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She does not sleep at night! Do what you are capable of doing (regularly). Al-Hawlā’ bint Tuwayt (may Allah be pleased with her) was with the Mother of the Believers ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she left when the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon ‘Ā’ishah. ‘Ā’ishah said to him: This woman does not sleep at night; rather, she spends it in prayer. So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said, disapproving of her being too hard on herself: She does not sleep at night! Engage in righteous deeds only as much as you can maintain regularly. By Allah, Allah does not get tired of rewarding His righteous, obedient servants for their acts of obedience, good deeds, and righteous actions until they grow weary and stop doing them.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Excessive worship beyond what the body can bear leads to boredom and fatigue, causing the soul to abandon it.
  • Moderation and balance in performing acts of worship lead to their continuity and firm adherence to them.
  • A small but consistent deed is better than a lot that is cut off.
  • An-Nawawi said: With the continuity of a small act of worship, obedience is sustained through remembrance, mindfulness, sincerity, and turning to Allah, unlike a burdensome large deed. Indeed, the consistent small act grows to surpass the interrupted large one many times over.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to sleep after having had intercourse without having water touch his skin, neither the water of ablution, nor the bathing water, nor water even to wash his private parts, since the word 'water' here is mentioned in a general sense, so it includes all the uses of water. The second possibility is that it means that he did not touch the water of ritual bath, not necessarily the water of ablution. This agrees with the Hadīths of the two Sahīhs that clearly state that he used to wash his private parts and perform ablution (when in a state of Janābah) before he would sleep, eat, drink, or have intercourse. One of such Hadīths is the Hadīth of Ibn ‘Umar in which ‘Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, could any of us sleep while in a state of Janābah?" He said: "Yes, as long as he performs ablution." [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim] ‘Ammār ibn Yāsir reported: "The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) allowed the one in a state of Janabah to eat, drink, or sleep after having performed ablution the same way one does before praying" [Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi]. However, the generality of the Hadīth refutes this interpretation. It is better to say that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would not touch water sometimes in order to clarify the permissibility of doing this, for if he had done that regularly, it would have been thought to be obligatory, and this was all done out of facilitation and alleviation for the Ummah.

Should I not feel shy of a man whom the angels feel shy of?

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was lying in my house with his thighs or shins uncovered. Abu Bakr sought permission to enter, and he allowed him in, still in that state. Abu Bakr talked (to him). Then ‘Umar sought permission to enter, and he allowed him in while in that very state. ‘Umar talked (to him). Then ‘Uthmān sought permission to enter, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and set right his clothes - Muhammad (one of the narrators) said: I do not say that it happened on the same day - and he (‘Uthmān) then entered and conversed with him. When he left, ‘Ā'ishah said: "Abu Bakr entered and you did not care and did not arrange your clothes, then ‘Umar entered and you did not care and did not arrange your clothes, then ‘Uthmān entered and you got up and set your clothes right!" Understand this hadith

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was lying in her house, and his thighs or shins were uncovered. As Abu Bakr asked for permission to enter, he allowed him in, and his thighs or shins were still uncovered. Abu Bakr conversed with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Then ‘Umar asked for permission to enter, so the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) allowed him in, without changing his position. He talked to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Then ‘Uthmān asked for permission to enter, so the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, arranged his clothes, and covered his thighs or shins. Then he allowed him in. When ‘Uthmān left, ‘Ā'ishah remarked that when Abu Bakr entered, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not mind, and so did he when ‘Umar got in. However, when ‘Uthmān entered, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, straightened his clothes, and covered his thighs or shins. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''Should I not feel shy of a man whom the angels feel shy of?'' Now, this Hadīth cannot be taken as a proof that the thighs are not ‘Awrah, for there is uncertainty in the Hadīth about the parts of the body that were uncovered: the thighs or shins. So, it cannot be said with certainty that it is permissible to uncover the thighs. Also, the Hadīths where the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was reported to have uncovered his thighs indicate a practice rather than a saying of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). These Hadīths were reported by young Companions. There are other Hadīths reported by senior Companions, however, in which the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stated that the thighs are ‘Awrah. So precaution entails that these Hadīths are to be complied with. The rule is that a statement outweighs a practice. Also, the practice is subject to possible interpretations. Another reason is that the uncovering, as the Hadīth indicates, was done in the presence of one's close relatives, so, it does not apply to everywhere. As per the Fatwa of the Permanent Committee, thighs are ‘Awrah.

When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the battle of the Trench, also known as the battle of the Confederates, after Allah had granted him victory against the disbelievers of the Quraysh and those who supported them, he entered his house, put down the war gear, and took a bath to wash away the dust of the battle. Jibrīl (peace be upon him) came and told him: You had put down your weapon, but the angels have not yet put them down and are still carrying theirs. Then he ordered him to set out to fight the Banu Qurayzhah, a Jewish community that lived at the outskirts of Madīnah, who betrayed the covenant of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and helped the disbelievers. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) set out with his Companions, fought them, and Allah rewarded them with victory over their enemies.

One of them asked his companion: “What is wrong with this man?” The other replied: “'He is under a magic spell.” The first one asked: “Who performed magic on him?” The other replied: “Labīd ibn al-A‘sam.” The first one asked: “What did he do it with?” The other replied: “With a comb and the hair stuck in it, and the skin of a male date palm pollen.” The first one asked: “Where is it?” The other replied: “In the well of Dharwān.”’ The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) went with some of his Companions to the well. ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that Labīd ibn al-A‘sam, a Jew from the tribe of Banu Zurayq, cast a spell on the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he imagined that he had done something that he had not. One day, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was in ‘Ā'ishah's house, but he was paying her no attention as he was totally engrossed in supplicating repeatedly to Allah, the Almighty, to reveal to him the reality behind this issue. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told her that Allah, the Almighty, had answered his supplication and sent two angels to him; one of them sat by his head and the other by his feet. One of them said to the other: “What is wrong with this man?” referring to the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). The other said: “He is under a magic spell.” He asked: “Who has bewitched him?” The other said: “Labīd ibn al-A’sam.” He asked: “With what?” meaning: what was used to create this magic spell? The other said: “With a comb and the hair stuck in it, and the skin of a male date palm pollen.” He asked: “Where is it?” The other said: “In the well of Dharwān.” This was a well-known well in Madīnah. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) went there with some of his Companions and took it out. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came back and told ‘Ā'ishah that the water of the well was red like a Henna leaf infusion (either because the water of that well itself was bad or due to what had been thrown into it), and the date palms were as hideous and ugly as the heads of devils. ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "Should you take it out?" meaning: should you take those things out of the pollen skin and show them to the people so they know what had happened? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No. Allah has healed me and I was afraid that I would spread evil among the people," meaning: Allah has healed me, and I feared that spreading this among the people might bring evil upon them, as it would attract the hypocrites’ attention to the harm that magic can cause, and may encourage them to learn it to harm the believers. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) gave up this benefit due to fear of its evil consequences. So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the well should be filled with earth, and it was. Some people have denied the story of magic being done to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) claiming that it casts doubt upon his infallibility. They argued that, accepting the story means that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) might have imagined that he was seeing Jibrīl when he was not there, and that something had been revealed to him when nothing had been revealed. However, all of this is to be rejected, because the evidence that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was infallible in what he conveyed from Allah, the Almighty, and that he was infallible in his manner of conveying it is well established. The harm that afflicted him due to the magic did not include any deficiency regarding conveying the Message. Rather, it was the sort of illness and troubles that normally afflict human beings. The effect of the magic that was performed on the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was explained in other narration, which stated that he (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) imagined that he had had sexual intercourse with his wives, when he had not done so.

It is not permissible for a woman of age and sound intellect to pray without a veil, meaning: with her head and neck bare. If she prays unveiled, her prayer is invalid. Here, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) says: "Allah does not accept" her prayer. This means that the lady's prayer is neither valid nor rewarded. For these restrictions to apply, one must be of age, which, in Islamic terms, has signs: menstruation, emission of semen, growth of pubic hair, or completing fifteen years of age. Menstruation is mentioned in the Hadīth because it is a specific sign of female adulthood. It should be noted, however, that women cannot pray when they have their cycle. Texts of the Sunnah, as well as the scholarly consensus, rule against performing the prayer during menses.

Al-Hārith ibn Hishām (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) how the revelation came to him. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told him that the angel, Jibrīl, would sometimes come to him and his voice communicating the revelation was as strong as the sound of a bell. This form was the hardest on the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and afterwards he would be overwhelmed and severely distressed and then it would lift. After this he fully understood and had memorized what the angel had said to him. The angel would make a loud sound when he came down with the revelation to distract the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) from matters of the worldly life and to make him focus on the sound. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would understand what the angel said to him, as he heard nothing but the angel's voice. At other times, the angel would come to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in the form of a man, such as Dihyah (may Allah be pleased with him) or another man, and communicate the revelation to him, and the Prophet would understand it. ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that on very cold days, the Prophet's forehead would sweat due to the stress of receiving the revelation.
