Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There have come to you the people of Yemen,” he meant by this the Ash‘ariyyūn, who were the people of Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with them). This is supported by the Hadīth narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (3/155) on the authority of Anas ibn Mālik who reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow a people will come to you whose hearts are softer for Islam than yours." Anas said: "The Ash‘ariyyūn came, and among them was Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari. When they approached Madīnah, they began chanting lines of poetry that meant: 'Tomorrow we will meet our beloved ones, Muhammad and his group.' When they arrived, they began shaking hands. So, they were the first to introduce the handshake.”

I have never touched plain or woven silk softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)

Narrator in the source: Anas

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I have never touched plain or woven silk softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) nor have I smelt a perfume more pleasant than the scent of the Messenger of Allah. Verily, I have served the Messenger of Allah for ten years, and not once did he say to me 'uff', nor did he say about something I had done, “why did you do it?”, nor about something I hadn’t done, “why didn’t you do it?”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) who had served the Prophet for ten years, said: "I have never touched plain or woven silk softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him)." People would find the hands of the Prophet to be soft when they touched them, and they would also find his scent to be pleasant. Anas narrates that he never smelt a fragrance more pleasant than the scent of the Prophet. Anas then said that he served the Prophet for ten years, and not once did he say 'uff' to him, which is an interjection that denotes being fed up and annoyed with someone. For ten years, the Messenger never expressed being fed up with him, whereas if someone served us or accompanied us for one week or so, we inevitably feel some sort of annoyance with them. The Prophet also never questioned him why he did something in a certain way, including the things that Anas did without the Prophet's instructions. Even though he was his servant, he treated him kindly and respectfully and never asked why he didn’t do something that he hadn’t done. This is part of the good moral character of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).

Allah has appointed an angel in charge of the womb, and the angel says: O Lord, (it is) a sperm drop! O Lord, (it is now ) a clot! O Lord, (it is now) a piece of flesh. How long will he live? All that is written while the fetus is still in his mother's womb

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) says, "Allah has appointed an angel in charge of the womb", i.e. Allah, the Almighty, has assigned an angel to be in charge of the womb, which is the place where a child is created inside his mother. "And the angel says: 'O Lord, (it is) a sperm drop!", i.e. O Lord, this is a sperm drop, which is the man's semen. The same applies to the next statement: "O Lord, (it is now ) a clot!", i.e. O Lord, this is a clot; which is thick blood stuck together. Then he says, "O Lord, (it is now) a piece of flesh", i.e. O Lord, this is a piece of flesh. It was explained in another narration that each of these development stages in the womb takes forty days. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then, when Allah wills to complete its creation", i.e. the small piece of flesh because it is the last stage of development, and completing its creation is by blowing the soul into it after 120 days, as mentioned in another narration. Then the angel says: "O Lord, (will it be) a male or female?", i.e. so I can write it down. "Wretched or blessed?", i.e. is it a wretched one from the inhabitants of Hellfire, then I will write it down, or a happy one from the inhabitants of Paradise then I will write it down. "How much will his provisions be?", i.e. will it be little or abundant? "How long will he live?", i.e. will he have a long or short life? "All that is written while the fetus is still in his mother's womb", i.e. the angel will write down everything mentioned just as Allah orders him, while the fetus is still in its mother's womb.

When Allah created Adam in Paradise and shaped his image, He left him for some time before blowing life into him. So Satan started to walk around him in circles and look closely at him to find out what this creation was. When he saw that Adam was hollow on the inside, he knew that it was a weak creature that does not have the ability to ward off the whispering of Satan, or he knew that that creature would commit a sin motivated by his insides (since he sinned by eating from the forbidden tree), or he knew that creatures that are hollow on the inside are weak. Some people considered the words: "in Paradise" to be problematic, given the narrations that say that Allah created Adam from different parts of the earth. The answer that was given to those people is that it is possible that Adam was left like that until he went through several stages and his image was ready for the breathing of life into it, then it was carried to Paradise where life was blown into him there.

Understand this hadith

Listen to your rulers and be obedient to them even if an Abyssinian slave whose head is like a raisin is appointed to be your leader. The comparison of his head to a raisin denotes physical description, because the hair of Abyssinians is not like the hair of the Arabs. Abyssinian hair is curly, with their curls resembling raisins. This is an emphasis on the fact that the mentioned ruler is of pure Abyssinian descent. "Was appointed a ruler over you" indicates that the order to listen and obey includes the deputy of the supreme leader as well as the leader himself. If it happens that a leader overcame the people and took control of them and he is not an Arab, rather, he is an Abyssinian slave, then it is our duty to listen and obey him. This Hadīth is proof that it is obligatory to be obedient to the rulers, except if they order us to disobey Allah, because obedience to them ensures stability and security, and prevents chaos and the pursuit of personal inclinations and desires. If someone disobeys the rulers in a matter where it is obligatory to obey them, then this leads to chaos and the bias of each individual to his own opinion. Consequently, security is compromised, state matters fall into disorder, and trials and tribulations become widespread.

One of the sons of Abu Talha was ailing. Abu Talha went out and the boy died in his absence

Narrator in the source: Anas

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: One of the sons of Abu Talha was ailing. Abu Talha went out and the boy died in his absence. When he came back, he inquired: "How is the boy?" Umm Sulaym, the boy’s mother, replied: "He could not be more tranquil than he is now." She served him supper, and he ate it and then they had sexual intercourse. Afterwards, she said to him: "Arrange for the burial of the boy." In the morning, Abu Talha went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of what had happened. He asked: "Did you sleep together last night?" Abu Talha said: ‘Yes.’ So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah, bless them." Later, she gave birth to a baby boy. Abu Talha said to me: "Pick up the boy and take him to the Prophet." He sent some dates with him. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there anything with him?" He said: "Yes, some dates." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took a date, chewed it, and put it in the mouth of the baby, rubbing the chewed date around the baby's gum. He named him ‘Abdullāh. In another version: Ibn ‘Uyaynah reported: “A man from the Ansār said: ‘I saw nine sons (of this boy), all of whom were reciters of the Qur’an.’” Another version reads: “Abu Talha’s son from Umm Sulaym died. She asked family members not to tell Abu Talha about his son, as she would inform him herself. Abu Talha came home and she gave him supper. He ate and drank. She then beautified herself in the best way she had ever done, and he slept with her. Noticing that he was gratified, she said: ‘O Abu Talha. If some people borrow something from another family and then the lenders ask for their item, would they refuse to give it back to them?’ He said: ‘No.’ She said: ‘Then, seek divine reward for the loss of your son.’ Abu Talha got angry and said: ‘You did not tell me this until I stained myself (with sexual intercourse), and now you tell me about my son!’ He went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about the matter, and he said: ‘May Allah bless the night you spent together!’ And she conceived a child. One day the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey and she was with him. Whenever he came back from a journey to Madīnah, he would not enter it at night. As they approached Madīnah, she felt labor pains. Abu Talha remained with her and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) carried on. Abu Talha said: ‘O Lord, You know that I love to go out with the Messenger of Allah when he goes out and enter with him when he enters, and I have been detained as You see.’ Umm Sulaym said: ‘O Abu Talha, I do not feel as much pain as I was feeling earlier, so we had better move on.’ We carried on and she felt the birth pangs as they reached Madīnah and gave birth to a baby boy. My mother said to me: ‘O Anas, no one should suckle him until you take him to the Messenger of Allah in the early morning. Next morning, I carried the baby to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him… and he narrated the rest of the story.

Anas ibn Mālik reported that Abu Talhah, his stepfather, had a son who was sick. When Abu Talhah went out one day to attend to his business, his son passed away. When he returned home, he asked about his health and received the reply that he could not be more tranquil than he is now. She spoke the truth, for he was dead, although Abu Talhah thought that his son had recovered and that was why he was tranquil. She served supper, and he ate, feeling relieved due to his son's assumed recovery. They then had sexual intercourse. Afterwards, she said: “Bury the boy, for he is dead,” and Abu Talhah buried him in the morning. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) received the news of this and asked whether they had had intercourse. Jābir replied that they had. So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated to Allah to bless them and Umm Sulaym gave birth to a baby boy. Abu Talhah asked Anas to take the baby to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) giving him a few dates to be chewed and rubbed by the Prophet in the boy's mouth. So the first thing to enter the baby’s stomach was the Prophet’s saliva, a source of blessing for him. When he brought the baby to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) the Prophet asked whether he had something with him. Anas told him that he had few dates. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took the dates and chewed them so they would mix with his saliva and would be easy for the baby to swallow. So the first thing to enter the baby’s stomach was the Prophet’s saliva, which would make him blessed and happy. He took the chewed date out of his mouth and put it in the baby’s mouth and rubbed it. He named him ‘Abdullāh. This boy grew up and had nine children, all of whom became reciters of the Qur’an, due to the Prophet’s supplication. In the version reported by Muslim, Umm Sulaym instructed her family members not to tell Abu Talhah about his son's death so she could tell him first. After he returned home, she served him food until he was full. Then, she beautified herself and they had intercourse. She then gave him an example, likening their son to a loan that needs to be repaid to the lender. She said: “O Abu Talhah. If some people borrow something from another family and then the lenders ask for their item, would they refuse to give it back to them?’ He said: ‘No.’ She said: ‘Then, seek divine reward for the loss of your son.” Abu Talhah got angry and said: ‘You did not tell me this until I stained myself (with sexual intercourse), and now you tell me about my son!’ He went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to complain about his wife and what she had done. But the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated to Allah, the Almighty, to bless their night and the intercourse they had had during it to make it yield a good fruit. Umm Sulaym became pregnant. Later, she and her husband were with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his journeys, and, as they were about to enter Madīnah, she felt labor pains. It was the custom of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) not to enter Madīnah until he had sent a messenger to inform the residents of the caravan’s arrival. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then carried on and entered Madīnah, but Abu Talhah, attending to his wife, could not go with him. Supplicating to Allah, the Almighty, Abu Talhah said: "O Lord, You know that I love to go out with the Messenger of Allah when he goes out and enter with him when he enters, and I have been detained as You see." Umm Sulaym said: "O Abu Talhah, I do not feel as much pain as I was feeling earlier, so we had better move on." We carried on and she felt the birth pangs as they reached Madīnah and gave birth to a baby boy. She instructed Anas to take the baby to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and let no one suckle him, so the Prophet’s saliva would be the first thing to enter his stomach, giving him blessing in this world and in the Hereafter. The fruit of this blessing was manifested in the fact that the boy grew up and had numerous children, all of whom were righteous and successful. Concluding this commentary, we should say that seeking blessing in something discharged from the Prophet's body is a merit exclusive only to him and shared by no one else. This is clearly proved by the fact that the Companions, who lived at the time of the revelation and were most acquainted with religious matters, never sought such blessing from the rightly-guided Caliphs or any other senior Companion.

I felt some feebleness in the voice of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and perceived that it was due to hunger; so have you anything with you? She replied in the affirmative

Narrator in the source: Anas

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Abu Talhah said to Umm Sulaym: "I felt some feebleness in the voice of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and perceived that it was due to hunger; so have you anything with you?" She replied in the affirmative, and brought out barley loaves, then took out a head-covering of hers, in a part of which she wrapped those loaves and then put them beneath my mantle and covered me with a part of it. She then sent me to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). I [Anas] set forth and found the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sitting in the mosque and some companions were with him. I stood near them, whereupon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Has Abu Talhah sent you?" I replied in the affirmative, whereupon he said: "Is it for a feast?" I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to those who were with him to get up. They set off and so I did before them, until I came to Abu Talhah and informed him. Abu Talhah said: "O Umm Sulaym, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) has arrived along with some people and we do not have enough to feed them?" She said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." Abu Talhah went out (to receive him) until he met the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) he proceeded along with him until they both entered. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Sulaym, bring forth that which you have with you," and she brought such bread. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then commanded that the bread be broken into small pieces, and when Umm Sulaym had squeezed a container of fat on it as a dressing, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said whatever that Allah willed him to say over it. He then said: "Allow ten to enter." He permitted them, and they ate until they were satiated. They then went out. He again said: "Allow ten more," and he permitted them and they ate until all the people were satiated, and they were seventy or eighty men" [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]. In another narration: "They continued to enter and exit, ten at a time, until no one remained who had not entered and eaten to his fill. He then collected the leftovers and it was the same quantity as what had been eaten." In another narration: "They ate ten at a time, until eighty people had eaten. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and the hosts ate, and they left a surplus." In another narration: "There was enough leftover to feed their neighbors." In another narration reported by Anas who said: "One day I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and found him sitting with his companions, and he had tied his belly with a bandage. I asked some of his companions why the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had bandaged his belly. They said that it was due to hunger. I then went to Abu Talhah, the husband of Umm Sulaym bint Milhān, and said to him: "Father, I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) having bandaged his belly. I asked some of his companions the reason and they said that it was due to hunger." Abu Talhah came to my mother and said: "Is there anything?" She said: "Yes, I have some pieces of bread with me and some dates. If the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) comes to us alone we can feed him to his fill, but if someone comes along with him this would be insufficient for them." And he mentioned the rest of the Hadīth.

This Hadīth means that one day the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was famished, and Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) realized that from the weakness of his voice. So he told his wife, Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) about it and asked if she had some food. She said that they had enough to feed the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). She took out some barley loaves and then took one of her head coverings, wrapped the bread up with it and placed it under Anas's cloak and covered him with the other end of the head covering. When Anas approached the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) he found him sitting among his Companions, so he went over to him and stood there. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did Abu Talhah send you?" Anas said: 'Yes.' He was unable to give the food to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) because there were many Companions around him. He also knew that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was not used to eating food alone apart from his Companions. By his answer, Anas meant to invite the Prophet to come alone to the house of Abu Talhah, so he could eat as the family had wished. However, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told his Companions to come with him. They all set off and Anas said: "I set off ahead of them," and in another narration: "I was sad because many came along with him." He added: "I came to Abu Talhah and informed him. Abu Talhah said: "O Umm Sulaym, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) has arrived with some people, and we do not have enough to feed them." She said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) entrusted the matter to Allah and His Messenger, as if she recognized that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had done that intentionally, so that the honor of multiplying the food could be demonstrated by him. Her response indicates her superior understanding. Abu Talhah went to meet the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he proceeded with him until they both entered the house. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said (to Umm Sulaym): "Bring what you have." In another narration: "Abu Talhah received him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, We have nothing but a loaf of bread that Umm Sulaym made.'" And in another narration, Abu Talhah said: "It is only a loaf of bread," whereupon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah will bless it." And in another narration, Abu Talhah said: "O Messenger of Allah, I sent Anas just to invite you; we do not have enough to feed all those I see," whereupon the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go in, for indeed Allah will bless whatever you have." When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entered the home of Abu Talhah, he said: "Bring what you have, Umm Sulaym.'' So she brought the loaf of bread, which the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked to be broken into small pieces. Umm Sulaym squeezed some fat out of a leather container onto the food to dress it and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) make a supplication over the food. In another narration: "I brought it and he untied it and said: 'In the Name of Allah. O Allah, make it blessed in abundance.'" Then he said: "Allow ten to enter." He gave them permission, and they ate until they were satiated and then went out. He again said: "Allow ten more," and he gave them permission and they ate until all the people were satiated, and they were seventy or eighty men. [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim] In another narration: "They continued to enter and exit, ten at a time, until no one remained who had not entered and eaten his fill. He then collected the leftovers and it was the same quantity as before they started eating." In another narration: "They ate ten at a time, until eighty people had eaten. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and the hosts ate and they left a surplus." In another narration: "There was enough leftover to feed their neighbors."
