Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that the Shariah rulings fall into three categories: what is left unaddressed, prohibitions, and commands. As for the first: It is what the Shariah has left unaddressed, as there is no ruling, and things, in principle, are not obligatory. During the Prophet's lifetime, it was a must not to ask about something that had not occurred for fear that it might become obligatory or forbidden through revelation, as Allah has left it unaddressed out of mercy towards His slaves. After the Prophet's death, on the other hand, if the question is posed by way of seeking legal opinion or learning about what one needs of the religion, then it is not only permissible but also commanded. However, if the question is posed by way of obstinacy and affectation, then this kind of question should be avoided, and this is what the Hadīth refers to, as it could lead to what happened to the Children of Israel when they were commanded to slaughter a cow. It was sufficient for them to obey the command by slaughtering any cow; however, when they acted obstinately, things were made hard for them. Second: The prohibitions: It is whatever one is rewarded for abandoning and is punished for doing. So, all prohibitions must be avoided. Third: The commands: It is whatever one is rewarded for doing and punished for abandoning. The commands must be carried out to the best of one's ability.

Lessons from the hadith
  • People should be occupied with what is important and necessary, leaving what is not immediately needed, and they should not be preoccupied with asking about what has not occurred.
  • It is prohibited to ask questions that may lead to the complexity of issues and open the door to suspicious matters that lead to wide divergence.
  • Commanding that all prohibitions be avoided because avoiding them entails no hardship, and this is why the prohibition here is general.
  • Commanding that orders be carried out according to the ability, as it could entail hardship or one could be unable to do it. Hence, the command here depends on the ability.
  • Forbidding the act of asking too many questions. Scholars divided questions into two categories: First: Questions that are meant for learning what one needs of the religion, and this kind of question is required, and an example of this is the Companions' questions. Second: Questions that are asked by way of obstinacy and affectation, and this is the kind of forbidden question.
  • Warning this Ummah of disobeying their Prophet as what occurred in the previous nations.
  • Asking frequently about what is not necessary and disagreeing with the prophets lead to destruction, especially when the questions are about what is unattainable, like matters of the unseen, which none knows except Allah, and the events taking place on the Day of Judgment.
  • Forbidding the act of asking about extremely difficult matters. Al-Awzā‘i said: When Allah chooses to deprive His slave of the blessing of knowledge, He makes him speak fallacies, for I noted that those were the least among people in terms of knowledge. Ibn Wahb said: I heard Mālik say: Arguing about knowledge turns off the light of knowledge in one's heart.

Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How come that Ibn Jameīl withheld it; was he not poor then made rich by Allah?" As for Khālid, you are doing him injustice for he devoted his armor and war gear to the cause of Allah. As for Al-‘Abbās, the charity due on him and the like of it are upon me." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) to collect Zakah. When ‘Umar asked Al-‘Abbās ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib to pay the share due on him, he refused, and so did Khālid ibn al-Walīd and Ibn Jamīl. So ‘Umar went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to complain to him about the three men. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that Ibn Jamīl had no excuse for withholding Zakah except that he was poor and Allah made him wealthy, the thing that necessitated his immediate payment of Zakah. As for Khālid, it was unjust to say that he refused to pay Zakah, for he had devoted his armors and war gears to exclusive use in the cause of Allah. By this, he wanted to get closer to Allah by spending something not mandatory on him. So it was impossible that he would withhold a mandatory charity. As for Al-‘Abbās, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that he would pay Zakah on his behalf, probably because of his being held in high esteem as indicated by: “Do you not know that a man’s uncle is like his father?"

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Muslims from fasting a day or two ahead of Ramadan out of cautiousness for Ramadan, because the obligation of fasting Ramadan is based on sighting the crescent, and there is no need for affectation. However, if someone has a habitual fast, such as fasting every other day or fasting on Mondays or Thursdays, and it coincides with this time, then he may fast. This is not considered a part of anticipating Ramadan. This also applies to obligatory fasts, such as making up for missed fasts or fulfilling a vow.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Affectation is prohibited, and the observance of worship as legislated, without any addition or omission, is obligatory.
  • Part of the rationale behind this—and Allah knows best—is to distinguish between the obligatory acts of worship and the voluntary ones, to be prepared for receiving Ramadan with energy and eagerness, and for fasting to be the distinctive mark of that virtuous and special month.

Understand this hadith

Zakah is founded on justice and equality, hence, Allah has made it obligatory upon all types of properties, growing or apt to growth, such as harvested crops and merchandise for sale. As for properties that do not grow, those intended for possession or personal use, no Zakah is due on its owners, because it is a personal item. This category includes what one rides, be that a horse, a camel, or a car. The same rule applies to the slave used for service, one's furniture and utensils made for personal use. However, the exception here is Zakat al-Fitr on the slave, which is obligatory because it is associated with people not properties.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that whoever eats or drinks forgetfully while fasting, whether the fast is obligatory or voluntary, should complete his fast and not break it because he did not intend to break the fast; rather, it is sustenance that Allah provided him with, and it is Allah Who fed him and gave him drink.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The validity of the fast of whoever eats or drinks forgetfully.
  • Whoever eats or drinks forgetfully incurs no sin because he does not do this by his choice.
  • The kindness of Allah towards His slaves and how He facilitates things for them and removes hardship and difficulty from them.
  • The fasting person does not break his fast by any of the fast invalidators unless three conditions are met: 1. Being aware; if he is ignorant, the fast is not broken. 2. Remembering; if he is forgetful, his fast is valid and he does not need to make up for it. 3. Willingness; not under compulsion, meaning he consumes the invalidating means by choice.
