Verily, among the things I fear the most for you after me is the splendor and adornment of this worldly life when they become plentifully available to you

Narrator in the source: Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri reported that the Messenger of Allah

Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: One day the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit, and we sat around him. He said: "Verily, among the things I fear the most for you after me is the splendor and adornment of this worldly life when they become plentifully available to you." A man said: O Messenger of Allah, can good bring forth evil? The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, and it was said to him: What is the matter with you? You are talking to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he is not talking to you. We noticed that he was receiving revelation. He said: He wiped off his sweat and said: "Where is the questioner?" It seemed as if he liked his question. He said: "Verily, good does not bring forth evil, but some of what grows in spring kills or is about to kill except for the eater of Khadrā’ (kind of plant) that eats until both its flanks expand, then it faces the sun and defecates and urinates and starts to graze again. This wealth is, indeed, green and sweet. A good companion of the Muslim, it is from which he gives to the needy, the orphan, and the wayfarer—or as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said. Whoever takes it unlawfully is like the one who eats but is never satiated, and it will be a witness against him on the Day of Judgment."

One day the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit talking to his Companions and he said: What I fear most for you after me is what is disclosed to you of the blessings of the earth, splendor, adornment, and pleasures of this world and what it contains of the various types of possessions, clothes, crops, and other things that people take pride in their beauty despite their being transient. A man said: The splendor of this worldly life is a blessing from Allah, so how could such a blessing turn into misfortune and punishment?! People blamed the questioner when they noticed how the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, thinking that he had aroused his anger. However, it became clear that he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was receiving revelation, and he, then, started wiping the sweat off his forehead. He said: Where is the questioner? He said: Here I am. He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah and commended Him then said: True goodness brings nothing forth but goodness; however, this splendor is not purely good given the temptation and competition it leads to and how it distracts people from focusing duly on the Hereafter. Then he gave an example saying: The plants and Khadir of the spring, which is a kind of plant the cattle like, could kill or almost kill because of excessive eating that leads to repletion. An exception to this is the eater of the Khadir that eats until both sides of its belly are filled, then it turns to face the sun and throws the dung out of its belly or urinates, then it brings up what is in its belly and chews then swallows it, and then it starts to graze again. This wealth is like a green and sweet plant that could kill or almost kill if it is too much unless a small amount, which is needed, is only used thereof to fulfill sufficiency through lawful channels, for in this case it causes no harm. It could be a good companion to the Muslim if he gives the needy, the orphan, and the wayfarer from it. Whoever takes it rightfully, it will be blessed for him, but whoever takes it wrongfully will be like the one who eats and is never satiated, and it will be a witness against him on the Day of Judgment.

Lessons from the hadith
  • An-Nawawi said: It indicates the merit of wealth for whoever takes it rightfully and spends it on charitable causes.
  • The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed about the condition of his Ummah and how worldly adornment and temptations will be opened for them.
  • It was from the practice of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to give examples to make meanings clear and easy to understand.
  • Encouraging the act of giving charity and spending money on charitable causes and warning against stinginess.
  • What is understood from his statement: "Verily, good does not bring forth evil," is that sustenance, even if abundant, is counted among goodness, and it could only be subject to evil if it is withheld from those who deserve it out of stinginess or if it is extravagantly spent on what is not prescribed. Moreover, everything that Allah has ordained to be good will never be evil and vice versa; however, it is feared that one who is granted goodness could be subject to what brings him evil given the way he disposes of it.
  • Abandoning haste in giving a response if it requires contemplation.
  • At-Tībi said: Four types could be derived from it: One that excessively eats from it, enjoys it, and is totally indulged until its ribs are swollen and it does not stop, which rapidly brings about its destruction. One that eats in the same manner but resorts to trickery to combat the disease after becoming intense, but it overcomes it and leads to its destruction. One that eats in the same manner but hastens to remove what harms it and tries to push it until it is digested and it is safe. One that does not eat excessively and is not engrossed in eating; rather, he eats only what satisfies his hunger and keeps him alive. The first is an example of the disbeliever, the second is an example of the sinner who is heedless of giving up sins and repenting until it is too late, the third is an example of the one who mixes righteous deeds with others and hastens to repentance that is accepted from him, and the fourth is an example of the one who abstains from worldly pleasures and seeks the Hereafter.
  • Ibn al-Munīr said: This Hadīth contains beautiful similes. First: comparing wealth and its growth to the emergence and growth of plants. Second: comparing the one engrossed in earning money and utilizing means to the animals engrossed in grazing. Third: comparing the endeavor to have more of it and saving it to gluttony and satiation. Fourth: comparing the wealth produce, despite its high status in people's eyes that has led to exaggeration in withholding it, to the animal's droppings, which is an exquisite reference to regarding it as filthy under the Shariah. Fifth: comparing the one who does not seek to collect it and possess it to the sheep when it rests and lies on its side while facing the sun, which is one of its best states in terms of serenity and tranquility, and it denotes its awareness of its interests. Sixth: comparing the death of the money collector who withholds it to the death of the animal that is heedless of avoiding what harms it. Seventh: comparing wealth to the companion that is liable to turn into an enemy, as when the money is possessed and tightly tied out of love for it, this entails withholding it from those who deserve it, and so it leads to punishing its possessor. Eighth: comparing taking money wrongfully to the one who eats without ever feeling satisfied.
  • As-Sindi said: According to the report, two things must be fulfilled. First: it has to be rightfully earned. Second: it has to be spent in its proper channels. When any of the two conditions is missed, it becomes harmful...it could also be said: It bears reference that the two conditions are concurrent; thus, one is not aided to spend in the proper channels unless he takes it rightfully.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that whoever believes in Allah, accepts Him as a Lord, God, Owner, Master, and Commander, embraces Islam as a religion, submitting and surrendering to all of its commands and prohibitions, and believes in Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) as a prophet with everything he was sent with and conveyed, Paradise will be guaranteed for him. Abu Sa‘īd (may Allah be pleased with him) was amazed and asked: Repeat it to me, O Messenger of Allah, and he did. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) added: And I have another quality by which Allah raises a slave by one hundred degrees in Paradise; the distance between every two degrees is like that between the heavens and the earth. Abu Sa‘īd asked: What is it, O Messenger of Allah? He replied: Jihad for the sake of Allah, Jihad for the sake of Allah.

He asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth and was guided to a monk. When he went to him, he informed him that he had killed ninety-nine people and asked if his repentance could be accepted. The monk replied in the negative, so the man killed him and made him the hundredth. After that, the man once again asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth and was guided to a scholar. He informed him of his hundred murders and asked if there was a chance for his repentance to be accepted. The scholar replied in the affirmative and said: 'Who can place a barrier between him and the repentance?' He advised him to travel to a certain land where people were worshiping Allah, the Almighty, and asked him to join them in their worship and not to return to his land, which was an evil land. The man listened to the scholar’s advice and set out from his land, when he reached the middle of the way death approached him. The angels of mercy and the angels of torment disputed over the man. The angels of mercy said: 'He came with a repenting heart to Allah, the Almighty.' The angels of torment said: 'He has never done anything good in his life.' Another angel then came in the form of a human being and they agreed to take him as an arbitrator. He said: 'Measure the distance between the man and the two lands and see to which one he is closer.' They did that and found him closer to the land he was traveling to, so the angels of mercy took his soul.” Another authentic narration reads: “He was one span closer to the land of piety, so he was considered one of its people.” The wording of another authentic narration reads: “Allah, the Almighty, ordered this land (evil place) to go far away and the other land (good place) to get closer and on measuring the distances, he was found one span closer to the village to which he intended to go and so he was forgiven.” Another narration reads: “He directed his chest towards it (the village he intended to go to).”

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that among those nations that lived before there was a man who had killed ninety-nine people. He regretted what he had done and asked to be guided to the most knowledgeable of people to see if his repentance could be accepted. He found a worshiper, with little knowledge, who felt that the man’s sin was too serious to be forgiven, so told him: Your repentance is not going to be accepted. The man got angry and killed the monk. Then, he once again asked of the most knowledgeable of people. He found a scholar who assured him that no one could stand between him and repentance. Moreover, he advised him to travel to a certain village, where people were devoted to worshiping Allah, and to leave his own village, which apparently was a land of disbelief. The man listened to the scholar’s advice and started his journey to the of believers, when he was in the middle of the way, death approached him. Here, a dispute arose between the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment. Allah sent them another angel to settle that dispute. He suggested measuring the distance between the man and both villages and if he was found closer to the land of disbelief, then his soul should be taken by the angels of punishment. and if he was found closer to the land of faith, then the angels of mercy should take his soul. Finally, the man was found one span closer to the land of faith and thus his soul was taken by the angels of mercy.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that whoever fasts a day in Jihad, and it is said in Jihad or otherwise, sincerely for the sake of Allah, seeking reward and recompense from Allah, then by His grace, Allah will distance him from the Fire seventy years.

Lessons from the hadith
  • An-Nawawi said: The merit of fasting in the way of Allah, and it is meant to apply to whoever is not harmed by it, does not neglect any rights because of it, and does not hamper his ability to fight or fulfill any of the missions of his fight.
  • Encouraging and motivating the voluntary fast.
  • It is obligatory to offer the fast sincerely for Allah's sake and seek His pleasure, not for showing off, gaining a good reputation, or any other purpose.
  • As-Sindi said: His statement (in the way of Allah) may mean simply having a sincere intention or fasting while being a warrior in battle. The second meaning is the more apparent one.
  • Ibn Hajar said: His statement (seventy falls) refers to fall as a specific time of the year, but here it means a year. Fall is mentioned specifically instead of the other seasons—summer, winter, and spring—because fall is the most fruitful season, as it is the time when fruits are harvested.

Understand this hadith

Muslims used to give out Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of every young and old person as one Sā‘ of food during the time of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and during the time of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs. Their food was barley, (raisins): dry grapes, (Aqit): dried yogurt, and dates. One Sā‘ is equivalent to four Mudds, and one Mudd is equal to two handfuls of an average person. When Mu‘āwiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Madīnah as a caliph and the Syrian wheat became abundant, he delivered a speech and said: I see that two Mudds of the Syrian wheat (half a Sā‘) is equivalent to one Sā‘ of dates, so the people adopted this opinion. Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for me, I will continue to give it as I used to give it during the Prophet's lifetime for as long as I live.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Clarifying the amount of Zakat al-Fitr during the time of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him); one Sā‘ of food, regardless of the type or value.
  • All human food is valid to be given as Zakat al-Fitr; however, these four types were particularly mentioned because they were the staple foods during the time of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
  • It is not valid to give Zakat al-Fitr in the form of money instead of food.
  • Commenting on "Sharh Muslim,"  An-Nawawi said: When the Companions differ, the opinion of some is not more valid than that of the others, so we must refer to other evidence. We found that the apparent meaning of the Hadīths and analogy both agree on the requirement of a full Sā‘ of wheat, like other types of food, and thus it must be adopted.
  • Ibn Hajar said: In the Hadīth of Abu Sa‘īd, there is evidence of his strict adherence to and compliance with the prophetic traditions and avoidance of resorting to personal reasoning when there is textual proof. As for what Mu‘āwiyah did and the people's agreement with him, it indicates the permissibility of Ijtihād (independent reasoning), which is commendable. However, when a clear text exists, Ijtihād is considered invalid.

Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform I‘tikāf in the middle ten days of Ramadan, in pursuit of Laylat al-Qadr. One year, he stayed as usual in I‘tikāf up to the night of the twenty-first (of Ramadan). On the morning of that night, he was supposed to end his I‘tikāf. However, he learned that Laylat al-Qadr would be in the last ten nights. So he told his Companions who stayed in I‘tikāf with him the middle ten nights to continue their I‘tikāf the last ten nights. He also told them that Allah, the Almighty, showed him Laylat al-Qadr in his sleep, but later made him forget which night it was. However, in that year he saw in his sleep a sign of that night, which was his prostration in the morning prayer on water and mud. Allah fulfilled the vision of His Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and it rained on the night of the twenty-first. The mosque of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was built like a lattice; its pillars were made of palm trunks and its roof made of palm stalks and fronds. Therefore, the roof leaked from rain, and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated on water and mud in prayer on the morning of the twenty-first.

Understand this hadith

In this Hadīth the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting the two days, two types of garments, and two prayers. The two days on which fasting is forbidden are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Ad'ha, and the wisdom behind the prohibition of fasting these days is that it is not proper to fast on days of feast and delight. The two types of garments are wearing a garment that is void of openings for the hands, and sitting on one’s buttocks while holding his both legs pulled back with his arms in case he wore only one garment, it has been restricted in the narration of Al-Bukhāri: "If there is nothing covering his private parts." The two prayers are any prayer after the Fajr prayer and after the ‘Asr prayer; this is to eliminate any means leading to imitating the disbelievers who prostrate to the sun at the time of its rising and setting. However, it is permissible during this time to perform the obligatory prayer as well as prayers for specific reasons (i.e. entering the mosque and so on).

Understand this hadith

Zakah is a means of support given by the rich to the poor. Hence, it is not due on anyone who is not rich or has enough resources. Allah, the Almighty, has stated the minimum amount on which Zakah is due. Anyone owns less than the minimum amount is considered poor, and nothing is to be taken from him. Thus, no Zakah is due on the owner of silver unless he has five ounces. Likewise, no Zakah is due on the owner of camels unless he has five camels or more. There is no Zakah on less than five camels. Finally, no Zakah is due on the owner of grains and fruits unless he has five Wasqs (total of 300 Sā‘s).
