Indeed, when one of you dies, he is shown his place in the morning and the evening

Narrator in the source: Ibn ‘Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, when one of you dies, he is shown his place in the morning and the evening. If he is among the people of Paradise, he is shown his place in Paradise, and if he is among the people of Hellfire, he is shown his place in Hellfire.
Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that when a servant dies, his dwelling and specific place in Paradise or Hellfire are shown to him at the beginning and the end of each day: his place in Paradise if he is among the people of Paradise, and his place in Hellfire if he is among the people of Hellfire. It will be said to him: This is your place to which you will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment. This serves as a means of comfort and delight for the believer and a torment for the disbeliever.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The punishment and bliss of the grave are true.
  • Ibn Hajar said: This presentation is clear for the pious believer and the disbeliever. As for the sinning believer, it is also possible that his seat in Paradise is shown to him to which he will eventually end up.

Describing part of the bliss of the grave and its torment

Narrator in the source: Abu Hurayrah reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah say:

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the deceased – or one of you – is buried, there come to him two black and blue angels; one of whom is called Munkar and the other Nakīr. They say: 'What did you say about this man?' So, he says what he used to say about him: 'He is the slave of Allah and His Messenger. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.' They say: 'We knew that you would say that.' Then his grave is made spacious for him, seventy cubits by seventy, then it is illuminated for him. Then it is said to him: 'Sleep,' and he says: 'May I go back to my family and tell them?' They say: 'Sleep like the bridegroom who will be woken by none but the dearest of his family to him,' until Allah raises him from that resting place of his. But if he is a hypocrite he says: 'I heard the people say something so I said something like what they said. I do not know.' They say: 'We knew that you would say that.' Then it is said to the earth: 'Tighten your sides around him,' so it tightens its sides around him until his ribs interlock, and he continues to be tormented therein until Allah raises him from that resting place of his.'"

When the deceased is buried, two black and blue angels come to him; one named Munkar and the other Nakīr. They say to him: What did you use to say about this man? They mean the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). He says: He is the slave of Allah and His Messenger; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and messenger. They say: We knew that you would say that; then his grave is widened for him seventy cubits by seventy, then it is illuminated for him. Then it is said to him: Sleep; and he will say: I wish to return to my family and inform them of my pleasant condition so that they would be happy and not grieve over me. They will say: Sleep like the sleep of a bridegroom who will not be awakened except by the most beloved of his family to him. Then, he will sleep peacefully until Allah resurrects him on the Day of Resurrection. On the other hand, if the deceased is a hypocrite he will say: I heard people saying something, i.e. that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, so I said as they were saying: and I do not really know if he was a prophet or not. They will say: We knew that you would say that; then it will be said to the earth: gather together and tighten around him. Then its parts will gather around him tightly until his ribs will be no longer in the normal arranged state as they used to be due to the severity of the pressure and the squeezing of his body parts, thereby each of his two sides will cross over the other. He will continue to be tormented in this condition until Allah, the Exalted, resurrects him on the Day of Resurrection.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reports that there will soon come a time in which some type of people will be sitting, with one of them reclining on his couch, and when a Hadīth from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reaches him, he will say: What decides the matters between you and us is the noble Qur’an. It is sufficient for us. What we find therein as lawful, we act upon it, and what we find therein as unlawful, we avoid it. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed out that anything he prohibited or forbade in his Sunnah is the same as what Allah prohibited in His Book, for he only conveys from his Lord.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Sunnah should be highly valued and observed like the Qur’an.
  • Obedience to the Messenger is obedience to Allah Almighty and disobeying him is disobedience to Allah.
  • It establishes the authority of the Sunnah and responds to those who reject the Sunnah or deny it.
  • Whoever turns away from the Sunnah and claims that he only adheres to the Qur’an does actually turn away from both of them, and his claim about following the Qur’an is false.
  • This is one of the proofs of the Prophet's prophethood, as he informed about certain things that would happen in the future, and it did happen as he informed.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed out that among the portents of the Hour approaching is that Shar‘i knowledge will be taken away through the death of scholars. As a result, ignorance will increase and spread, adultery and immorality will be common, drinking alcohol will prevail, and men will decrease in number while women will increase so much that for fifty women there will be one man to take care of their affairs and interests.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Hadīth demonstrates some portents of the Hour.
  • Knowledge of the time of the Hour is one of the unseen things Allah Almighty kept to Himself.
  • We are urged to learn Shar‘i knowledge before it is lost.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Referring to the prevalence of sins and trials at the end of time.
  • Urging Muslims to be on their guard and to get ready for death by means of faith and righteous deeds, and to keep away from the areas of trials and afflictions.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reported that the Hour will not occur until the Muslims and the Jews fight each other - until when a Jew flees to hide behind a stone from the Muslims, Allah will make the stone speak and it will call out to the Muslim that there is a Jew behind it, so that he will go and kill him.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) reported about some future and unseen things, as revealed to him by Allah Almighty - and they will surely take place.
  • The Muslims and the Jews will fight each other at the end of time, and this is one of the portents of the Hour.
  • Islam will endure until the Day of Judgment and prevail over all other religions.
  • Allah Almighty supports the Muslims against their enemy, and part of this support is that He will make the stones speak at the end of time.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) swears to the imminence of the descent of Jesus, son of Mary, (peace be upon him) to judge between people with justice in compliance with Muhammad's Shariah. He will break the cross that is glorified by the Christians. Jesus (peace be upon him) will also kill the pig. He (peace be upon him) will abolish Jizyah and urge all people to embrace Islam. Moreover, wealth will overflow and no one will accept it given its abundance and the fact that everyone will find sufficiency in what he already has, in addition to the descent of blessings and the succession of good things.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Establishing the descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) at the end of time, which is one of the signs of the Hour.
  • The Prophet's Shariah is not to be abrogated by any other.
  • The descent of blessings on wealth at the end of time and people's abstention from it.
  • Bearing glad tidings that the Islamic religion will last and Jesus (peace be upon him) will rule by its Shariah at the end of time.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reports that among the major portents of the Hour is that the sun will rise from the west instead of the east, and when people see it, they will all believe. At that point, the belief of a disbeliever will not benefit him, nor will the righteous deeds or repentance be of any avail. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that the Hour will come so abruptly that people will be busy with their life affairs. So, the Hour will come when a buyer and a seller have spread out a garment between them, but they cannot finish their transaction or fold up the garment. And the Hour will come when a man has taken milk from his she-camel but will not be able to drink it. And the Hour will come when a man is repairing his tank, but he will not be able to water his livestock therefrom. And the Hour will come when a man has lifted a morsel to his mouth but will not be able to eat it.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Embracing Islam and repenting are accepted so long as the sun has not risen from the West.
  • We are urged to get prepared for the Hour by belief and righteous deeds, for the Hour will come abruptly.
