The most excellent fast after Ramadan is Allah's month, Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is prayer during the night

Fasting in the month of Muharram, which is the first month in the Hijri calendar, is the best fast after that of Ramadan. This is because Muharram marks the beginning of a new year, so commencing it with fasting, which is a light, is the most virtuous deed. Therefore, a Muslim should fast during it and try not to miss it except for an excuse. The Prophet's statement "the month of Allah" highlights the significance and distinction of Muharram among the other months. The Hadīth also shows that praying at night is the best voluntary prayer a Muslim can offer after the obligatory ones. This is because in night prayers man achieves a high level of humbleness and submission as the heart is serene and in complete privacy with its Lord at these times. Allah, the Almighty, said: {Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words} [Sūrat al-Muzzammil: 6]. On the other hand, the night is the time of tranquility and rest, and thus it becomes harder on the soul and tiring for the body when the person dedicates it to worship. Therefore, praying at night occupies the top of religious assignment and is the most excellent in the sight of Allah.

Meaning of the Hadīth: "The Witr is due" means that the Witr is either an affirmed act of the Sunnah or that it is an obligation. In this Hadīth, however, the Witr is affirmed, for there are explicit proofs that it is not an obligation, such as the following: - Talhah ibn ‘Ubaydullāh, a man from Najd, asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) about the prayers to observe; he was told to observe only five prayers in the day and the night. Other prayers would be voluntary [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]. Since the Witr was not included, it is not obligatory. - The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said : "Five prayers that Allah enjoined on His slaves. For anyone who performs them and misses nothing from them out of neglect, there is a pledge from Allah to admit him into Paradise.'' Proofs that Witr is not obligatory: - Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet sent Mu‘ādh to Yemen to tell them, among other things, that Allah enjoined five prayers on them to perform in the day and the night [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]. That is evidence is strong because the Prophet sent Mu‘ādh to Yemen just before the Prophet died. - ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Witr is not obligatory." Therefore, being ''due'', the Witr is a confirmed act of the Sunnah. It could be prayed as seven, five, three, or one unit of prayer. In principle, optional night prayer is made two by two Rak‘ahs, as a Hadīth indicates [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]. However, it is possible to pray all night units of prayer with one Tashahhud. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet used to perform the Witr as seven or five Rak‘ahs consecutively, without ending them with the Salām greeting or speaking in between. [Musnad Ahmad] ‘Ā'ishah reported that the Prophet used to perform the Witr as five Rak‘ahs and sit only in the last one. [Abu Dawūd] As for the Witr which consists of three units of prayer, Ubayy ibn Ka‘b reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Sūrat al-A‘lā in [the first Rak‘ah] the Witr, Sūrat al-Kāfirūn in the second, and Sūrat al-Ikhlās in the third. He would not say the Salām greeting except once after the third unit of prayer. [An-Nasā'i] Ibn ‘Uthaymīn (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: It is permissible to pray the Witr as three, five, seven or nine Rak‘ahs. If one prays three, he has two options: The first one is to pray three Rak‘ahs consecutively with one Tashahhud; the second one is to say the Salām greeting after the first two Rak‘ahs and then offer the last one. It is preferable to say the Salām greeting after every two Rak‘ahs and then finish the Witr with one Rak‘ah as in doing so, one does extra worship, and it is in agreement with the Prophet's practice.

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) led his Companions in offering eight Rak‘ahs and the Witr during the month of Ramadan. The next night, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered in the mosque, thinking that the Messenger would do the same as he had done the night before. So they waited for him until the morning. Then they went to the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him why he had not attended to lead them in prayer. In response, he clarified that he feared the possibility of this prayer becoming obligatory upon them. That is why he did not join them in the mosque – out of mercy and compassion towards his followers. Speaking about this noble Prophet, Allah, the Almighty, says: {There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.} [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 128] The original version of this Hadīth was narrated by Al-Bukhāri and Muslim on the authority of ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who reported: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) went out in the middle of the night and prayed in the mosque once, and some men prayed with him. The people spoke about it the next morning, and so more people gathered and prayed with him. They circulated the news the following morning, and so, on the third night, the number of people increased greatly. The Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came out, and they prayed behind him. On the fourth night, the mosque was overwhelmed by people beyond its capacity. However, the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came out for the Fajr prayer only. Upon finishing the prayer, he faced the people, uttered the testimony of faith, and then said: ‘To proceed: Verily, your gathering was not hidden to me, but I was afraid that this prayer might be enjoined upon you and you might not be able to perform it.’”

"Allah, the Almighty, has added a prayer for you": Allah added for them another prayer that they did not offer before in this manner, which is the Witr prayer. The statement indicates that Allah added that prayer as a favor to Muslims, as if he was saying: Allah has made the five prayers obligatory upon you so as to reward you for them, but He did not settle for that; rather, He prescribed for you voluntary night prayer and Witr in order to extend to you more favor. "So offer it": this is a command. As a basic rule, a command implies obligation; however, this Hadīth as well as others whose apparent meaning is that the "Witr" prayer is obligatory were construed to mean that it is recommended, not obligatory, based on authentic explicit evidence. "in the period between ‘Ishā' prayer and Fajr prayer": this part specifies the time frame for offering Witr, which begins after performing ‘Ishā' prayer. So, when a person finishes offering the ‘Ishā' prayer, the time for Witr prayer starts, even if he offers ‘Ishā combined with Maghrib in advance (at the time of Maghrib). The time to offer Witr ends at the break of dawn; i.e. when the time of the Fajr prayer starts. If dawn breaks while one is offering Witr, he should complete it. Then ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "and behold, this person was Abu Basrah al-Ghifāri," i.e. the one who informed ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās was Abu Basrah al-Ghifāri (may Allah be pleased with him)." Abu Tamīm said: "Abu Dharr and I were sitting. So Abu Dharr took me by the hand and we set off to Abu Basrah. We found him at the door next to the house of ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās," i.e. that after they were informed of that statement of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) they wanted to confirm its accuracy. So, they went to Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and when they reached him, Abu Dharr asked him about the authenticity of the statement he reported from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). "He replied: 'Yes.' Abu Dharr asked: 'You heard him?' He replied: 'Yes.' He asked again: 'You heard him?' He replied: 'Yes.'" So he confirmed to them that the statement that he reported from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, Allah, the Almighty, has added for you a prayer…" was authentic

It is well-known that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the voluntary night prayer during Ramadan and outside Ramadan. Hence, Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked about the voluntary night prayer to be offered in Ramadan; he wondered whether the prayer of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) during the nights of Ramadan was like his prayer outside it, in terms of the number of Rak‘ahs, or it was different. ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied that there was no difference between his prayers during Ramadan or otherwise, since throughout the whole year he used to perform eleven Rak‘ahs and no more. Then, she clarified for him the manner in which they were performed, saying: "He would pray four", meaning: he would perform two Rak‘ahs and make Taslīm, then two more Rak‘ahs and make Taslīm, as ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) clarified and explained in detail the summary of this Hadīth in another narration attributed to her in Sahīh Muslim, where she said: "In the time between the ‘Ishā' prayer and the Fajr prayer, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform eleven Rak‘ahs of prayer, making Taslīm after every two Rak‘ahs, and concluding them with one Rak‘ah, i.e. the Witr prayer." This is in addition to his statement: "The voluntary night prayer is performed in pairs of Rak‘ahs." [Al-Bukhāri and Muslim] "And do not ask about their beauty and length", meaning: do not ask about their manner (of performance), because they were the epitome of beauty and perfection, in terms of the quality of recitation and the length of standing, bowing, and prostrating. Likewise, the last four Rak‘ahs that were performed two by two; do not ask about their beauty and perfection, in terms of the quality of recitation and the length of standing, bowing, and prostrating. "Then he would pray three", meaning: what is apparently understood is that he would perform them altogether without separation. Then he would make Taslīm in the last Rak‘ah. However, another narration attributed to ‘Ā'ishah clarifies that he would make Taslīm after two Rak‘ahs, followed by a single Rak‘ah which is Witr. This is explicitly stated through her words: "He would make Taslīm after every two Rak‘ahs, followed by one Rak‘ah." This indicates that he would separate the (last) three Rak‘ahs by the Taslīm, which he made after the first two Rak‘ahs thereof. "O Messenger of Allah, do you sleep before performing the Witr prayer?" meaning: how do you sleep before performing the Witr prayer? "He said: 'O ‘Ā'ishah, indeed my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep'", meaning: his heart is never inattentive although his eyes are sleeping. Rather, his heart is aware and feels everything, such as consideration of time and precise determination of it. That is why the visions of the prophets are considered part of the revelation.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) against abandoning Qiyām al-Layl, as someone else had done, without naming him so as to protect his privacy. A Muslim should be careful not to go to extremes and overburden himself with acts of worship. Whoever does so will be overwhelmed by the religion, given its numerous acts of piety and worship, and will eventually stop because of his inability to continue. Showing mercy to His slaves and making things easy for them, Allah, the Almighty, ordained certain acts of worship to be done at certain times. If a person adopts the approach of moderation, he will easily manage to fulfill all the rights upon him, including these of his Lord, his family, and his companions. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The actions dearer to Allah are those which are done regularly, even if they are little." So it behooves a person to allocate for himself a daily amount of Qiyām al-Layl, according to his ability.

This noble Hadīth includes an order for the people of the Qur'an, who are Allah's select slaves, to perform the Witr Prayer. This is because Allah is one and is unique in His essence, His attributes, and His actions and He loves what is single and odd. ''People of the Qur'an'' refers here to the believers in general, whether or not they recite the Qur'an. However, it is likely that those who recite the Qur'an are worthier of this address. In this regard, al-Khattābi said: ''It refers to those who recite and memorize the Qur'an. They were specifically mentioned because of their special honor and as a sign of special care. So, the people of the Qur'an should regularly perform the Witr Prayer, even though this is required from everyone. Since they have the privilege of being role models and have more knowledge that drives them to hasten to acts of obedience and good deeds, therefore they are worthier of being addressed by this prophetic order.”

Qays ibn Talq reported: Talq ibn ‘Ali visited us one day during Ramadan. He stayed with us until the evening and broke his fast with us. Then he led us in voluntary night prayer and the Witr prayer. Afterwards he went to his mosque and led his companions in prayer. When only the Witr prayer was remaining, he asked another man to step forward and said: ‘Lead your companions in the Witr prayer, because I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There should not be two Witr prayers during one night."

In this Hadīth, the noble Companion, Talq ibn ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) explained that he offered the Witr prayer with his family at the beginning of the night and then he led his people in prayer, but he did not pray the Witr prayer with them. Instead, he let another man lead them in the Witr prayer, because he had heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibiting Muslims from offering two Witr prayers in one night.
