I memorized from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ten Rak‘ahs (units of prayer)

Narrator in the source: Ibn ‘Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: I memorized from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ten Rak‘ahs (units of prayer): two Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr and two Rak‘ahs after it, two Rak‘ahs after Maghrib at his home, two Rak‘ahs after ‘Ishā’ at his home, and two Rak‘ahs before the Fajr prayer, an hour when none was allowed to enter upon the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Hafsah told me that after the muezzin would make Adhān (call to prayer) and after the break of dawn, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer two Rak‘ahs. Another wording reads: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer two Rak‘ahs after the Friday prayer.

Understand this hadith

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) clarifies that some of the voluntary prayers he memorized from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) were ten Rak‘ahs, which are called "As-Sunan ar-Rawātib" (regular Sunnah prayers). They are: two Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr and two after it, two Rak‘ahs after Maghrib at his home, two Rak‘ahs after ‘Ishā’ at his home, and two Rak‘ahs before Fajr, and these are ten Rak‘ahs in total. As for the Friday prayer, he used to offer two Rak‘ahs after it.

Lessons from the hadith
  • It is recommended to perform the mentioned Rawātib (regular Sunnah prayers) on a regular basis.
  • It is permissible to perform the Sunnah prayer at home.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would often use the Siwāk and command the Muslims to use it. This practice was confirmed at certain times, like getting up during the night, as he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would brush and cleanse his mouth with the Siwāk.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Hadīth affirms that using the Siwāk is prescribed under the Shariah after sleeping at night, as sleep entails a change to the odor of the mouth and the Siwāk is a means of cleaning.
  • It emphasizes that using the Siwāk is prescribed under the Shariah whenever the mouth has a foul smell, based on the above meaning.
  • Cleanliness in general is prescribed under the Shariah and it is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and one of the sublime etiquettes.
  • The Siwāk is used for the whole mouth, including the teeth, the gums, and the tongue.
  • The Siwāk is a stick cut from the Arak tree or other trees. It is used to clean the mouth and teeth, freshen the mouth, and remove bad odors.

An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy upon him) said that this Hadīth is one of the general and fundamental principles of Islam on which many significant rulings are built. This principle signifies that ruling of things which one is certain about should remain effective and should not be changed because of doubts or assumptions. Even if doubts are strong, they should not affect the ruling as long as they have not reached the level of certainty or strong probability. This Hadīth is one of the many examples showing application of this principle. If a Muslim is certain about his being in a state of purity, and then he has doubts that something occurred that invalidated his purity, the ruling is that he still remains in a state of purity. Conversely, if a Muslim is certain that something happened that invalidated his purity, and later has doubts about his being in a state of purity, the ruling is that he remains in a state of impurity. The same ruling applies to the clothes and places, which are considered pure by default until their impurity is certainly proved. Another example is the number of Rak‘ahs that one performs in prayer. If a Muslim is sure that he has performed three Rak‘ahs and is doubtful about the fourth one, the basic ruling is that the fourth one is not done and he should perform it. Also, if a man is doubtful about divorcing his wife, the basic ruling is that the marriage remains effective, and so on and so forth.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went to Makkah during the Farewell Hajj and he Hady (sacrifice). ‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Yemen and also had a Hady. Since the Hady is a charity for the poor and needy, the giver has no right to freely use it or any of its part for exchange, as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade ‘Ali from giving the butcher any of it in exchange for his work. Instead, he would provide him his wage from something other than their meat, skins, or saddle cloths.

No regard is therefore given to anyone suggesting otherwise. Al-Bukhāri said: "It was said that man is ‘Umar." ‘Imrān ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Hajj Tamattu‘ was laid down in the Qur'an and the Sunnah. In the Qur'an, Allah, the Almighty, says: {And whosoever performs the 'Umrah in the months of Hajj, before (performing) the Hajj, he must slaughter a Hady such as he can afford} [Sūrat al-Baqarah: 196]. As for its legislation in the Sunnah, this is represented by the Prophet's performance and approval of this act, whereas no Qur'anic verses were revealed to prohibit it, nor did the Prophet forbade it later, till he died. So, ‘Imrān wonders: How can anybody prohibit it after that! By this, he refers to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb, who prohibited Hajj Tamattu‘, based on his own reasoning, aimed at boosts the pilgrims' numbers throughout the year. If a pilgrim performs ‘Umrah along with Hajj, he or she will only come during the season of Hajj. So, ‘Umar's ban was not meant as prohibition or abandonment of the application of the Qur'an and Sunnah in this respect; rather, it was a temporary ban for the public interest.

Some of you would whip your wives as if they were slaves and then have intercourse with them at the end of the day

Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the most wretched of them was sent forth, a man who was unique (in the bad sense), wicked and strong among his people, rushed to kill it." Then, he mentioned women and advised regarding them and said: "Some of you would whip your wives as if they were slaves and then have intercourse with them at the end of the day." !».
Understand this hadith

‘Abdullāh ibn Zam‘ah (may Allah be pleased with him) mentions that he heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) deliver a sermon from above his camel. This is because it was from the Prophet's guidance not to overburden himself. He would thus not request something that was not available, nor would he reject something that was available, as long as this would not entail negligence or exaggeration in the Shariah. The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was giving the sermon, and ‘Abdullāh ibn Zam‘ah heard him. He heard him mention the she-camel, which was the miracle of Prophet Sālih (Methusaleh) (peace be upon him). He also mentioned the one who had slain it, whose name was Qudhār, and he was the most wretched among his people. He made mention of some of his descriptions saying that he was unique (in the bad sense of the word) and extremely corrupt and that he enjoyed a high status among his people. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said during his sermon: "Some of you would whip their wives as if they were slaves." This indicates harsh disciplining. The context of the Hadīth indicates the improbability of these two being done by a rational person, i.e. that he would beat his wife severely and then have sexual intercourse with her the same day or night. This is because sexual intercourse normally requires a desire for companionship, love, and affection, whereas the one who is whipped normally shuns the one who whipped him. So, the dispraise of this type of action was pointed out here. If beating is necessary, it should be a gentle beating that does not cause complete repulsion, so one should not exceed the proper limits in both beating and disciplining. Then, he warned them against laughing at the act of passing wind because it is against good manners and because it entails exposing other people. Out of criticism for such an attitude, he said: "Why should any of you laugh at another doing what he does himself?" This is because laughing is normally caused by something strange or astonishing that lead to smiling. If the smile gets stronger and is accompanied by a sound, it will be considered laughter, and if it becomes even stronger than that, it will be called a guffaw. Since passing wind normally happens to all people, then what is the reason for laughing at the one who passes wind?

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a husband from hating his wife in such a way that would lead him to wrong her, abandon her, and turn away from her. Deficiency is part of man's nature, so, if he dislikes a bad characteristic in her, he will find another good one. He will, thus, be pleased with what he approves of and will patiently endure what he disapproves of the bad characteristics. This will help him remain patient without hating her in such a way that leads him to part with her.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Calling the believer to be fair and refer to reason whenever a dispute arises with his wife without resorting to emotions and temporary feelings.
  • A believer does not entirely hate a female believer in such a way that drives him to leave her; rather, he should overlook what he hates for what he loves.
  • Encouraging kindness and good companionship between spouses.
  • Faith calls to noble morals. Thus, no believing man or woman is free of good morals, as faith requires the existence of praiseworthy qualities in both of them.

Abu Jamrah asked Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with both of them) about Hajj Tamattu‘, and so he ordered him to do it. Then, he asked him about the Hady associated with it, as it was mentioned in the Qur'an: {Whoever performs ‘Umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals} [Al-Baqarah: 196]. He replied: "You have to slaughter a camel, a cow, a sheep, or one-seventh of a camel or cow." i.e. share the Hady with others. It seems that someone had opposed Abu Jamrah regarding Tamattu‘, so he saw in his dream that someone was announcing: "May Allah accept your Hajj and accept your Hajj Tamattu‘." He went to Ibn ‘Abbās and narrated to him this beautiful vision. Since good visions are considered one part of prophet-hood, Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) was pleased with it. He considered it glad tidings that Allah guided him to what was correct. He thus said: "Allah is the Greatest. That is the Prophet's Sunnah."
