Condemning Sins

Narrated by Abu DāwūdHasan

When I was taken on an ascent to heaven, I passed by a group of people (in Hellfire) with copper nails scratching their faces and chests

Narrator in the source: Anas

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When I was taken on an ascent to heaven, I passed by a group of people (in Hellfire) with copper nails scratching their faces and chests. I asked: O Gabriel, who are these? He replied: These are the ones who eat the flesh of people (by backbiting) and slander them."

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that when he was taken up to the heavens on the night of Isrā’ and Mi‘rāj, he passed by a group of people who had nails of copper, with which they were scratching and tearing their own faces and chests. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked Jibrīl (Gabriel) (peace be upon him): What did these people do to deserve such punishment? Gabriel (peace be upon him) replied: They are those who used to backbite others and speak about people's honor unjustly.

Lessons from the hadith
  • A stern warning against backbiting, with the backbiter likened to one who eats human flesh.
  • Violating people's honor through backbiting and similar acts is among the major sins.
  • At-Tībi, commenting on the Prophet's word "scratching”, said: Since scratching the face and chest is a trait of wailing women, it was made the punishment for those who backbite and slander Muslims—to indicate that such behavior is unbefitting of men and is instead from the traits of women in their most disgraceful and distorted state.
  • It is obligatory to believe in the unseen and in everything that Allah and His Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) have informed us of.

When two Muslims meet to fight each other with their swords, both the killer and the killed are doomed to Hellfire

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs that if two Muslims fight each other with their swords, with each one intending to kill the other, the killer will be in Hellfire for the actual killing of his companion; but the Companions were confused regarding the killed one and why he would be in Hellfire! The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) explained that he, too, would be in Hellfire because of his keenness to kill his companion and that nothing prevented him except that his companion managed to kill him first.

Lessons from the hadith
  • He who intends to commit a sin and engages in the means leading to it deserves the punishment.
  • The Hadīth gives a stern warning regarding Muslims fighting one another and threatens them with Hellfire for that.
  • Fighting among Muslims for a valid reason does not fall under this warning, such as fighting against aggressors and corrupters.
  • The perpetrator of a major sin is not regarded as a disbeliever for its mere commission, as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) named those fighting each other as Muslims.
  • If two Muslims fight each other with any means of killing and one of them kills the other, both the killer and the killed one will be in Hellfire. The sword is mentioned in the Hadīth as an example.

The most means leading people to Paradise are fear of Allah and good manners. To fear Allah is to shun all kinds of prohibitions, and good character is shown in dealing with people; and the least of it is to avoid harming others, while the highest of it is doing good to the one who misbehaved with you. On the other hand, the most causes that lead people into Hellfire are the mouth and the private parts, which often prompt one to exceed the limits concerning his Lord and the people.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wished to warn his nation against calumny and talebearing, which is telling people what others say about them with the intention of causing ill feelings and creating a rift between them. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) started his speech with a question in order to grab his listeners' attention. He asked them: "Shall I tell you what '‘ada' is? This term has also been interpreted to mean magic. Then he answered this question saying: "‘Ada" is to circulate the ill-speech that people make against each other. This has the same effect of magic in terms of the corruption and harm it causes among people. It turns people against each other, severs ties that were once strong, and fills the hearts with anger and resentment, as witnessed nowadays.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed us about three types of people who will deserve the punishment of Allah on the Day of Judgment with three punishments, unless they repent or are forgiven: The first: Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Judgment due to His intense anger; rather, He will turn away from them, or He may speak to them in a way that does not please them, indicating His wrath upon them. The second: He will not purify, praise, or cleanse them from sins. The third: They will receive a severe and painful punishment in the Hereafter. These types of people are: The first: An old man who commits the immoral act of adultery. The second: A poor man who has no wealth, yet despite that, he treats people with arrogance. The third: One who frequently swears by Allah when buying and selling, thereby dishonoring the name of Allah and using it as a means to gain wealth.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Al-Qādi ‘Iyād said regarding the reason for this severe punishment: Each of these individuals committed the mentioned sin despite being far removed from it, having no real necessity or strong urge leading to it. Though no one is excused for committing sin, their indulgence in these acts, despite the lack of pressing need or common habit, makes their behavior resemble defiance, disregard for Allah's rights, and deliberate disobedience without any compelling reason.
  • Adultery, lying, and arrogance are among the major sins.
  • Arrogance: rejection of the truth and despising people.
  • Warning against the frequent use of oaths in buying and selling, and encouragement to revere and respect the names of Allah Almighty. Allah Almighty says: {Do not use Allah’s name in your oaths.} [Surat al-Baqarah: 224]

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) tells that when Allah wants to inflict punishment upon people as a penalty for their bad deeds, the punishment befalls whoever is among them even those among them who are not like them (do not commit the same sins). It means that Allah, the Almighty, destroys all people when evil becomes rampant and sins are committed openly. On the day of Judgment, each of them will be resurrected according to his own deeds. If the deeds are righteous, then the outcome shall be good; otherwise, it shall be bad. Such punishment serves as a means of purification for the righteous people and a means of revenge against the evil ones. Resurrecting the righteous according to their deeds is an act of justice, because they will be rewarded for these good deeds in the Hereafter. In this life, however, whatever befalls them of affliction is expiation for any bad deed they have done. Thus, the punishment sent upon the sinners in the worldly life encompasses those who were with them but did not disapprove of their sins, as a consequence of the adulation they showed to the sinners. Then, on the Day of Judgment, each of them will be recompensed according to his deeds.

‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb reported from his father, who reported from his grandfather: The most rebellious of people against Allah, Exalted and Glorified, is someone who kills another in the sacred precincts of Allah; kills someone other than his killer; or someone kills someone out of a pre-Islamic animosity.

Understand this hadith

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had said that the most rebellious and tyrannical in the sight of Allah, as far as murder is concerned, are three people: 1. Someone who kills someone else whose blood is inviolable under the Shariah in the safe sanctuary of Allah; Makkah. A forbidden killing is the gravest sin after polytheism, and it is more forbidden and sinful when it is committed in the sanctuary of Allah. In this respect, Allah, the Almighty, says: {Whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] or wrongdoing - We will make him taste of a painful punishment} [Sūrat al-Hajj: 25]. In an authentic Hadīth, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''Your blood, honor, and properties are as inviolable to you as this month of yours in this country of yours.'' [Muslim: 1218] 2. Someone who kills someone other than his killer (the person who committed the murder). Allah, the Almighty, says: {No bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another} [Sūrat al-An‘ām: 164]. That is to kill someone other than his killer or to kill, along with his killer, someone else. Excessive murder was a pre-Islamic tradition, that Allah has forbidden. 3. Someone who kills due to the pre-Islamic animosities and feuds that Islam revoked. Exceptions, however, are someone who kills another while defending himself and not for any other reason. Also, killing someone who commits a crime that legalizes killing him, such as deliberate murder in the sanctuary, so the sanctuary does not provide a safe place for people to commit crimes.
