The strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both

Narrator in the source: Abu Hurayrah reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah say:

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both. Adhere to whatever brings you benefit, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If something befalls you, do not say: 'Had I done such-and-such, it would have been such-and-such;' rather, say: 'Allah has decreed, and whatever He wills, He does.' Indeed, 'if' opens the way before the devil to act."

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarifies that the believer is good from all aspects; however, the believer who is strong in his faith, resolve, property, and other aspects of strength is better and dearer to Allah Almighty than the weak believer. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) advised the believer to utilize the available means in what brings him benefit in his worldly affairs and the affairs of the Hereafter, along with depending upon Allah Almighty, seeking His help, and relying upon Him. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), then, forbids inability, indolence, and slackness in doing what brings benefit in both abodes. If the believer works hard and utilizes the available means while seeking Allah's help and asking Him for goodness, then he should do nothing but entrust all of his affairs to Allah while knowing that Allah's choice is the best. If some calamity befalls him after that, he should not say: "Had I done such-and-such, it would have been such-and-such." "Indeed, 'if' opens the way before the devil to act" in objecting to the divine decree and lamenting what has been missed. Instead, one should submissively and contentedly say: "Allah has decreed, and whatever He wills, He does." Everything happens in compliance with Allah's will, as He does what He wants and nothing can repel His predestination or reverse His decree.

Lessons from the hadith
  • People vary in faith.
  • Strength in deeds is recommended because it results in benefits that cannot be attained through weakness.
  • Man must adhere to what brings him benefit and avoid what brings him no benefit.
  • The believer must seek help from Allah in all his affairs and not depend on himself.
  • Establishing the divine decree and predestination and the fact that it does not contradict the pursuit of means and the endeavor to achieve good things.
  • It is prohibited to say "if" during calamities by way of indignation or objection to Allah's decree and predestination.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood among his Companions to deliver a sermon, and among what he said was: Indeed, Allah revealed to him that people must show humility toward one another—by lowering their wings to others and displaying gentleness of character—so that no one should boast of greatness, pride, or superiority over others due to lineage, wealth, or anything else. And so that no one should do wrong or transgress against another.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Hadīth encourages humility and warns against arrogance and looking down upon others.
  • Prohibition of transgression and boasting.
  • Humility for the sake of Allah has two meanings: First: To humble yourself before the religion of Allah, never feeling above it, nor disdain toward it and toward fulfilling its rulings. Second: To humble yourself toward the servants of Allah, not out of fear of them or hope for what they possess, but purely for the sake of Allah Almighty.

Understand this hadith

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs us that a Muslim cannot attain complete faith until he gives precedence to the love of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) over the love of his mother, father, son, daughter, and all people. This love entails obeying and supporting him and refraining from disobedience to him.

Lessons from the hadith
  • It is obligatory to love the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and give precedence to his love over the love for all other created beings.
  • A sign of complete love is to support the Prophet's Sunnah and sacrifice one's life and wealth for this purpose.
  • Love for the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) entails obeying his commands, believing what he said, avoiding what he prohibited and forbade, and following him and abandoning religious innovations.
  • The Prophet's right is greater and more emphatic than all other people, for he was a reason for guiding us, saving us from Hellfire, and making us win Paradise.

Allah has given a parable: a straight path

Narrator in the source: An-Nawwās ibn Sim‘ān al-Ansāri

An-Nawwās ibn Sam‘ān al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has given a parable: a straight path that is surrounded by two walls on both sides, with several open doors within the walls covered with curtains. There is a caller on the gate of the path who says: 'O people, enter the path, all of you, and do not deviate from it.' Meanwhile, a caller from above the path is also warning any person who wants to open any of these doors: 'Woe unto you! Do not open it, for if you open it, you will pass through.' The path is Islam, the two walls are the limits set by Allah, and the open doors are Allah's prohibitions. The caller on the gate of the path is the Book of Allah, while the caller above the path is Allah's admonishment in the heart of every Muslim."

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pointed out that Allah Almighty gave a parable likening Islam to a straight extended path that has no crookedness. On the two sides of this path there are two walls surrounding it. These two walls are the limits set by Allah, and within them there are open doors, which are Allah's prohibitions. On these doors, there are curtains that do not allow passersby to see who is inside. There is a caller at the beginning of this path who directs people and says to them: Walk on this path and do not deviate from it towards the sides. This caller is the Book of Allah. There is another caller above the path. When anyone walking on the path wants to open any of the curtains above these doors a little bit, he forbids him saying: Woe unto you; do not open it! If you open it, you will pass through, and you will not be able to prevent yourself from entering. This caller is Allah's admonishment in the heart of every Muslim.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Islam is the true religion, and it is the straight path that leads us to Paradise.
  • We must abide by the limits set by Allah and observe what He declared lawful and unlawful. Whoever takes these things lightly will be ruined.
  • The Hadīth points out the great merit of the Qur’an and urges us to act upon it, which yields guidance, light, and success.
  • It is Allah's mercy towards His servants and the sense of admonition He has put within their hearts that prevent them from falling into ruinous sins.
  • Out of His mercy, Allah put barriers that prevent His servants from falling into sins.
  • Giving parables is a method of education, which is intended to make the meaning clearer and easier to understand.

He replied: No. ‘Ammār said: Verily, I only prayed it briefly before the devil could distract me. I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: A servant may perform a prayer, yet only a tenth of its reward is written for him, or a ninth, or an eighth, or a seventh, or a sixth, or a fifth, or a quarter, or a third, or a half.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Keenness of the early generations to advise and counsel one another.
  • Verification and asking for clarification before objecting or criticizing.
  • Sufficing with the words of the Prophet (ﷺ) as the final and complete answer to any question or doubt.
  • The reward of prayer decreases in proportion to the lack of humility and contemplation within it.
  • Strong encouragement and earnest urging to maintain humility and to have one’s heart fully present with Allah Almighty during prayer.

’Umm Salamah, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned that she heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) once saying: No Muslim is afflicted with a calamity and then says what Allah has recommended for him to say: {We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return} [Surat al-Baqarah: 156], (O Allah, reward me) and grant me the reward for my patience (in my calamity), and compensate me (and replace it for me) with (something better); except that Allah replaces it for him with something better. She said: When Abu Salamah passed away, I said: Who among the Muslims could be better than Abu Salamah, the first household to migrate to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)? Then I said it with the support of Allah, and Allah replaced him for me with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), who is better than Abu Salamah.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The command to be patient at times of calamity and not to be discontent.
  • Turning to Allah in supplication during adversities, for He alone provides compensation.
  • It is necessary for the believer to comply with the command of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) even if the wisdom behind the command is not clear to him.
  • All goodness lies in the believer's compliance with the Prophet's command.

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (ﷺ) asked his Companions: Shall I tell you of something that brings a greater reward than frequently performing voluntary fasting, prayer, and charity? They said: Yes. He said: It is reconciling between those in conflict, for disputes lead to division, estrangement, hatred, and turning away from one another. The enmity that results from discord is a trait that destroys and eradicates both religion and worldly life, just as a razor completely removes hair.

Lessons from the hadith
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) used to ask his Companions questions and arouse their eagerness to know the answer.
  • At-Tībi said: This Hadīth encourages and urges reconciliation between people and the avoidance of causing discord, for reconciliation is a means of holding fast to the rope of Allah and preventing division among Muslims. Discord, on the other hand, is a breach in the religion; thus, whoever strives to mend it and remove its corruption attains a rank higher than that of one who fasts, prays, and is occupied only with his own personal worship.
