I would not be pleased to have the like of Uhud in gold and three days pass while even one dinar thereof remains with me, except what I keep for debts. Otherwise, I would distribute it among Allah's slaves like this, and like this, and like this

Narrator in the source: Abu Dharr

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: While I was walking with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in the Harrah of Madīnah, the Mount of Uhud came in sight. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr!" I said: "I am at your service, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "I would not be pleased to have the like of Uhud in gold and three days pass while even one dinar thereof remains with me, except what I keep for debts. Otherwise, I would distribute it among Allah's slaves like this, and like this, and like this", pointing to his right, his left, and his back. He walked and said: "The rich ones will be the ones with the least good deeds on the Day of Judgment except those who spend their wealth like this, and like this, and like this", pointing to his right, left, and back, "but these are only few." Then he said to me: "Stay in your place. Do not leave it until I come back to you." Then he proceeded in the darkness of night until he went out of sight. I then heard a loud voice and I was afraid that someone might have attacked the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). So I wanted to go to him, but I remembered what he had said: "Do not leave until I come back to you." Therefore, I stayed at my place until he came back to me. I said: "I heard a voice and I was afraid of it" and I mentioned that to him. He said: "Did you hear it?" I replied: 'Yes.' He said: "That was Jibrīl who came to me and said: 'Whoever died of your Ummah without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.'" I said: "Even if he committed fornication and theft?" He said: "Even if he committed fornication and theft."

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that he was walking with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in an area strewn with dark stones in Madīnah, and they came upon the well-known Mount of Uhud. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said that if he had the like of Uhud in gold, he would not be pleased to keep it for more than three days, except an amount of it that he would use to settle a debt. In other words, if he had an amount of gold equal in size to the Mount of Uhud, he would spend it all in the cause of Allah, and would only keep of it what he needs to settle debts and fulfill rights due to others. This indicates that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was among the most ascetic people in this world, because he did not wish to collect wealth except only to settle his debts. When he died, his armor was pawned with a Jew for some barley that he borrowed from him to feed his family. Had the worldly life been dear to Allah, the Almighty,, He would not have deprived His Prophet of it. Indeed, the world is cursed, and everything in it is cursed, except for the remembrance of Allah and what pleases Him, as well as a scholar and a seeker of knowledge. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) further said that those who have much wealth in the world will be destitute of good deeds on the Day of Judgment, because wealthy people are mostly arrogant, feel that they are not in need of Allah, and refrain from obeying His commands. They are distracted by the pleasures of the world as they indulge themselves in life, and thus find themselves with poor stock in the Hereafter. The minority, however, are those who spend generously in the cause of Allah. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) further said that anyone who dies without associating partners with Allah will enter Paradise, even if he robbed and fornicated. This does not mean that fornication and theft are not major sins. They are. That is why Abu Dharr was astonished, saying: “Even if he committed fornication and theft?!” And the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) replied in the affirmative. Concerning the one who dies after having committed major sins, Allah says: {Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills} [Sūrat An-Nisā': 48]. Allah may pardon or punish him. In case of punishment, however, he will end up entering Paradise. The rule is that any Muslim who does not associate partners with Allah or commits an act that takes him out of the fold of Islam will eventually settle in Paradise. However, anyone who commits an act of disbelief will reside eternally in Hell. All of his deeds will be rendered worthless. A case in point are the hypocrites, who used to say to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): {We testify that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah} [Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn: 1]. And they used to remember Allah but only a little, and they used to pray but {When they stand for prayer, they stand lazily} [Sūrat An-Nisā': 142]. Despite all that, they will be in the lowest depth of the Fire. Finally, this Hadīth encourages an ascetic approach toward the worldly life, i.e. not to be attached to it. The world should be in one's hand not in one's heart. The heart has to be sincere to Allah. Such is the perfect asceticism. This does not mean that one should abstain from enjoying this world. Rather, one should enjoy the lawful things of the world, without keeping the world in one's heart. This is what matters.

This Hadīth indicates that both parents have a right to good companionship and utmost care of their affairs. Allah says: {Accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness} [Sūrat Luqmān: 31]. However, the right of the mother precedes the right of the father by far. The father's right was not mentioned except after the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had emphasized the right of the mother by mentioning her three times. The mother's status is greater than the father's status, even though they both raise and bring up their children - the father with his wealth and care, and the mother with her services such as preparing their food, drinks, clothes, beds, etc. In fact, the mother suffers in raising her children greater than the father. She carries the child in her womb for nine months adding more to her pain and weakness; she gives birth to the child with hardship and severe pain as if she is almost dying; and she breast-feeds the child for two years during which she remains awake in order for him to relax and spares no effort of his betterment regardless of her pains. The Qur'an described these experiences saying: {And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months} [Sūrat al-Ahqāf: 15]. In this verse, Allah enjoined man to be dutiful to his parents and justified this injunction by listing only the suffering the mother endures as a sort of highlighting her great right on the children. Good companionship with the parents includes providing their food, drink, accommodation, clothing, and the other needs of living, particularly when they are needy. Moreover, if your parents' standard of living is low or adequate and you lead a luxurious and comfortable life, then you should raise them to your living standard or even higher. Doing this is part of your good companionship to the parents. Remember what Prophet Yūsuf did with his parents; when he was granted sovereignty, he raised his parents upon the throne after bringing them from the desert. The best manifestation of good companionship is what Allah said: {And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small"} [Sūrat al-Isrā': 23-24] So, hold back your tongue from saying bad words to them and keep them far from all things that could harm them. Speak to them kindly and be humble and obedient to them. Always supplicate to Allah for them sincerely from your heart and soul and say: "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small." Do not forget to provide your mother with special and greater care as implied by divine revelation and stated in this Hadīth.

Anyone who leaves his home or country in search of Shariah knowledge is in the same category of the one who goes out to fight in the cause of Allah, the Almighty, until he returns to his family. Indeed, the knowledge seeker is like a fighter in the cause of Allah in reviving religion, putting the devil to disgrace, and tiring his own soul out in a good cause.

Lessons from the hadith
  • Seeking knowledge is a form of jihad in the cause of Allah.
  • A seeker of knowledge receives the same reward as a fighter in the battlefield, for both of them do something that strengthens the Shariah of Allah and protects it against anything contrary to it.
  • If a person goes out to seek knowledge, he will be rewarded for his walk as he goes and comes back.

The guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me are like abundant rain that fell on some ground

Narrator in the source: Abu Mūsa

Abu Mūsa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me are like abundant rain that fell on some ground. A part of it was good, absorbing the water, so it brought forth abundant herbage and pasture; and there were some bare patches in it that retained the water by which Allah gave benefit to people who drank, watered, and grew plants. But some of it fell on another flat portion that could not retain the water or produce herbage. That is like the one who becomes versed in Allah's religion and receives benefit from the message entrusted to me by Allah, so he knows for himself and teaches others; and it is like the one who does not show regard to that and does not accept Allah's guidance with which I have been sent."

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), expressing amazement, likened the one who benefits from what he brought—of guidance and the path that leads to the ultimate goal—and from religious knowledge to a land upon which abundant rain falls. This land, in turn, is of three types: The first type: a pure and fertile land that absorbs the rainwater, causing abundant vegetation—both fresh and dry—to grow, from which people benefit. The second type: land that holds water but does not grow vegetation. It retains the water, allowing people to benefit from it—drinking from it, watering their animals, and irrigating their crops. And the third type: a flat, smooth land that neither retains water nor grows any vegetation. It neither benefits itself from the rainwater, nor does it benefit others. Likewise are those who hear what the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was sent with—of knowledge and guidance. The first type: the scholar who understands the religion of Allah, acts upon his knowledge, and teaches it to others. He is like the fertile land that absorbs the water, benefiting itself and causing the growth of the plantation, and thereby benefiting others. The second type: the one who memorizes and preserves knowledge but does not have a deep understanding or the ability to derive rulings. He collects knowledge and spends his time doing so, but he either does not act upon its supererogatory aspects or does not comprehend what he has gathered. He is like a tool for others— benefiting them—and is similar to land that holds water, from which people benefit. The third type: the one who hears knowledge but neither preserves it, nor acts upon it, nor conveys it to others. He is like a barren or smooth land that has no vegetation, neither absorbing water nor allowing others to benefit from it.

Lessons from the hadith
  • A clarification of the virtue of seeking knowledge and teaching it, and a warning against turning away from both.
  • Using parables and analogies helps clarify meanings for people.
  • Al-Qurtubi said: Just as rain revives dead land, religious knowledge revives the dead heart. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) likened those who hear this knowledge to the various types of land upon which the rain falls.
  • People vary in their ranks in terms of their reception of religious knowledge.

Verily, in the body, there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the entire body will be sound, and if it is corrupt, the entire body will be corrupt; verily, that is the heart."

Understand this hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) explains a general rule in matters and that they fall under three categories in the Shariah: clearly lawful matters, clearly unlawful matters, and doubtful matters with the rulings on whether they are illegal or lawful being unclear and unknown to many people. So, whoever abandons those suspicious matters keeps his religion safe by avoiding falling into the unlawful and keeps his honor safe from people's criticism of him for engaging in such doubtful things. Whoever does not avoid doubtful matters risks falling into the unlawful or being maligned by people. The Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) provided a parable to demonstrate the condition of a person who engages in doubtful matters, saying that he is like a shepherd who grazes his cattle close to a piece of land protected by its owner; so, his cattle are likely to pasture in this protected land, given its proximity. Likewise, he who engages in a suspicious matter draws near to the unlawful and is likely to fall into it. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that there is a piece of flesh in the body, namely the heart, and when it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the entire body becomes corrupt.

O people of the Ansār, did I not find you in a state of misguidance then Allah guided you aright through me? Were you not divided then Allah brought you together through me? Were you not in a state of poverty then Allah made you wealthy through me?

Narrator in the source: عبدالله بن زيد بن عاصم

‘Abdullāh ibn Zayd ibn ‘Āsim (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When Allah gave war booty to His Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on the Day of Hunayn, he distributed the booty among the people, and among those whose hearts had been recently reconciled to Islam. He did not give anything to the Ansār. It seemed that they felt uneasy that they did not receive a share like the others. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) addressed them saying: "O people of the Ansār, did I not find you in a state of misguidance then Allah guided you aright through me? Were you not in a state of disunity then Allah brought you together through me? Were you not in a state of poverty then Allah made you wealthy through me?" Every time he said something, they replied: "Allah and His Messenger are the most benevolent." Then he asked: "Why do you not answer me?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger are the most benevolent." He said: "If you wish, you may say 'you came to us in such-and-such a state.' Would you not be satisfied that the people go away with goats and camels and you go away with the Messenger of Allah to your homes? Were it not for Hijrah, I would have been a man from the Ansār. If the people were to tread a valley or a mountain pass, I would tread the valley and mountain pass of the Ansār. The Ansār are like Shi‘ār (inner garments), while other people are like Dithār (outer garments). No doubt, you will see people favored over you after me (in getting worldly benefits). So be patient until you meet me at the Basin)."

Understand this hadith

When Allah, the Almighty, bestowed upon His Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) a large amount of war booty in the battle of Hunayn, and after he ended the blockade he had imposed on Taif, he returned to get the booty; the majority of which was in the form of cattle. He had more than 40,000 camels and 120 sheep. So, he gave some people who had recently accepted Islam to attract their hearts and make them firm upon Islam. Some of the Ansār disapproved of this, but the nobles amongst them understood that this action on part of the Prophet was correct. The ones who disapproved said: "The Messenger of Allah is giving the booty to people whose blood is dripping from our swords (i.e. whom we had just fought), and he is not giving us anything." When the Prophet was informed of this statement, he ordered that they be assembled under a large canopy and he addressed them, saying: "What is this statement that has reached me from you?" He admonished them and acknowledged the support they offered to him and to the religion of Islam which he came with. After speaking to them, they were appeased and realized the great reward that Allah had granted them, represented in their companionship of Allah's Messenger and their return home with him accompanying them, in addition to what Allah has prepared for them in the Hereafter because of their support and the efforts they exerted in His Cause. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) also ordered them to show patience when they see other people favored over them after his death.
