What you need to understand
Read slowly, take notes and ask about anything that is unclear. The goal is steady understanding—not rushing to the next number.
The structure of Islam
The five pillars are the Shahadah, five daily prayers, zakat, fasting Ramadan and Hajj for the person able to undertake it.
They are not the whole religion, but they provide its essential public and personal structure.
Zakat and fasting
Zakat is due on qualifying wealth when its detailed conditions are met; it is different from voluntary charity. Ask a reliable scholar or calculator about your assets.
Ramadan fasting runs from true dawn to sunset. Illness, travel, pregnancy and other circumstances have detailed concessions that should be learned before Ramadan.
Hajj and ability
Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for the Muslim who is physically and financially able and can travel safely.
Learn its rites close to the time of travel. Do not let unfamiliar future obligations distract you from today’s prayer and faith.

Important boundaries
- Zakat calculations and fasting exemptions can depend on personal facts.
- Do not copy a ruling from another person whose health, finances or travel situation differs from yours.
