A concise Hajj guide

The main days and rites of Hajj, with reminders about questions that require individual guidance.

Ruling at a glance

Hajj is a pillar, obligatory once in a lifetime for an adult Muslim who is physically and financially able and has a safe route.

1

Ihram and the form of Hajj

  • Enter ihram at the miqat for your route; do not knowingly pass it while intending the pilgrimage without ihram.
  • Tamattu‘ is often suitable for a beginner: perform Umrah, leave ihram, then enter ihram for Hajj on the Day of Tarwiyah. Details depend on your circumstances.
2

Tarwiyah and Arafah

  • Go to Mina on the 8th if possible. On the 9th, remain at Arafah until sunset. Standing at Arafah is the central pillar of Hajj.
  • Devote time to affirming Allah’s oneness and supplication. The Prophetic guidance for pilgrims standing at Arafah is not to fast.
3

Muzdalifah and the Day of Sacrifice

  • After sunset, proceed calmly to Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha, and stay as required according to your ability and applicable concessions.
  • On the 10th: stone Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, offer the sacrifice for tamattu‘ or qiran, shave or shorten the hair, then perform tawaf al-ifadah and sa‘i if still required.
4

Days of Tashriq and farewell

  • Stone the three jamarat after midday on the 11th and 12th. Those who stay also stone them on the 13th.
  • Before leaving Makkah, perform the farewell tawaf unless an established exemption applies.

Beneficial actions

  • ✓ Guard your speech and avoid quarrelling and sexual misconduct.
  • ✓ Make supplication at Arafah and remember Allah after prayers.
  • ✓ Feed others, speak kindly and help fellow pilgrims.
  • ✓ Follow safety and organisation instructions.

Important reminders

  • ! Do not enter a dangerous crowd to perform a recommended act.
  • ! Stoning is an act of worship, not an occasion for insults or uncontrolled anger.
  • ! Different forms of Hajj, exemptions and missed rites require reliable individual guidance.
