Story chaptersZakariyya’s supplication and Yahya’s birth
01Zakariyya’s supplication and Yahya’s birth

Yahya’s account begins with his father’s prayer. Zakariyya was elderly and weak, and his wife had been unable to bear children, yet he asked Allah for righteous offspring and a pleasing successor. While he stood praying, the angels announced Yahya, describing him as noble, chaste and a righteous prophet.
When Zakariyya wondered at this, he was reminded that Allah does what He wills. His sign involved being unable to address people except by gesture despite being physically sound, alongside frequent remembrance. Surah Al-Anbiya recalls Allah granting him Yahya and making his wife able to bear a child, while praising their good deeds, supplication and humility.
02Yahya: wisdom, purity and the limits of historical reports

Allah commanded Yahya to hold firmly to the Scripture, with resolve and action, and granted him wisdom while still a child. Religious maturity is not restricted to old age.
He received compassion and purity, was mindful of Allah and kind to his parents, and was neither arrogant nor disobedient. His character joined mercy with firmness in truth.
Allah granted him peace on the day of his birth, death and resurrection: transitions in which a person needs divine protection and mercy.
Surah Al Imran calls him noble, chaste and a righteous prophet. The common explanation of his chastity emphasises self-restraint rather than asserting physical incapacity.
Historical works tell of his killing in connection with opposition to an unlawful marriage and a woman’s demand for his head. No authentic Sunnah text establishes that detailed manner of death.
The Quran condemns the unlawful killing of prophets by groups among the Children of Israel without identifying Yahya in a specific incident. His killing is widely reported historically, while its detailed circumstances are not established by an authentic revealed account.
