Story chaptersHud and Ad: when strength becomes arrogance
01Hud and Ad: when strength becomes arrogance

Hud reminded his people that Allah had made them successors to the people of Nuh and given them great physical strength. Their blessings called for remembrance and gratitude, not a belief that they were self-sufficient.
Ad behaved arrogantly on earth and asked who could be stronger than them. The Quran answers that Allah, who created them, was stronger.
Hud began with the same foundation as Nuh: worship Allah alone. He asked for no payment. He called them to seek forgiveness and repent, conveying Allah’s promise of rain and increased strength.
When accused of foolishness and lying, he calmly explained that he was a trustworthy messenger and sincere adviser. He returned the discussion to his message rather than answering insults with insults.
His people claimed that one of their gods had harmed him. Hud declared himself free of their worship of false gods, called Allah and them to witness, and placed his trust in his Lord and theirs, who holds authority over every living creature.
This was a messenger’s conviction that all power belongs to Allah, however impressive his people’s civilisation appeared.
02The wind that ended Ad’s arrogance

When Ad saw a cloud approaching their valleys, they welcomed it as rain. Instead, they were told that it brought the punishment they had demanded: a wind carrying painful suffering.
A familiar appearance did not reveal its true meaning. Having rejected Hud’s warning, they interpreted the sign according to their hopes rather than the revelation preceding it.
Allah sent a fiercely cold, violent wind against them for seven nights and eight successive days, leaving them like hollow palm trunks. The duration is stated in the Quran; no invented embellishment is needed.
Surah Al-Ahqaf describes the wind destroying everything it was commanded to destroy, until only their dwellings could be seen. Allah saved Hud and the believers through His mercy.
Muhammad ﷺ said that he was aided by the east wind and that Ad were destroyed by the west wind. This authentic report connects the account to the Sunnah without decorative tales.
The lesson is not that wind itself is evil. Wind is a creation of Allah and can bring mercy or punishment by His command.
