01Ayyub: patience, prayer and recovery

The Quran does not specify the precise illness or its duration. It records Ayyub’s brief supplication, acknowledging pain and praising Allah’s mercy. He neither complained resentfully nor pretended that he felt no pain.
Allah answered, removed his suffering, and granted him his family and as many again as mercy and a reminder for worshippers. Bringing distress to Allah is worship; patience does not mean abandoning prayer or treatment.
Surah Sad describes Allah commanding Ayyub to strike the ground with his foot, providing cool water for washing and drinking. Recovery came from Allah through a means He instructed him to use.
Allah praised him as patient, an excellent servant who repeatedly returned to Him. His patience was inseparable from devotion.
Sahih Al-Bukhari recounts that golden locusts fell upon Ayyub while he was washing and that he gathered them into his garment. When his Lord asked whether He had not already given him enough, Ayyub acknowledged that He had, while saying that he could never dispense with His blessing.
This does not portray greed: he recognised a lawful blessing from Allah. Material sufficiency never removes a servant’s need for his Lord’s favour.
